They had New Order supporting them in Lansdowne too, although I think that was because Frusciante was a fan

Don’t think they’re quite as terrible as everyone says they are, used to quite like some of By the Way. But they’re still not very good. 2

I like their 90s run plenty. I’m listening to By The Way now and its musically a very pretty record.

Its just the 80s 00s and Anthony Kiedis that ruins it for me.

Also their party tracks/more upbeat stuff is often really bad. They do write a nice mellow song though

Counterpoint; Sir Psycho Sexy lyrics

I got stopped by a lady cop
In my automobile
She said get out and spead your legs
And then she tried to cop a feel
That cop she was all dressed in blue
Was she pretty? Boy I’m tellin’ you
She stuck my butt with her big black stick
I said “what’s up?” now suck my dick
Like a ram getting ready to jam the lamb
She whimpered just a little when she felt my hand
On her crotch so very warm
I could feel her getting wet through her uniform
Proppin’ her up on the black and white
Unzipped and slipped “ooh that’s tight”
I swatted her like no swat team can
Turned a cherry pie right into jam

As someone said earlier - a crime against humanity.

I probably did, I’m being a bit harsh here and was probably being a bit nice there. That Anthony Pepper had irked me considerably.

I’ve had RHCP songs in my head ALL day

I’m genuinely very sorry.

They can have a 2. Dull as heck, morally questionable in their earlier days (looking at some of the stuff above, I think I might be being polite), DREADFUL live (saw them a couple of times at festivals when I was younger). But would I be a lying hypocrite if I didn’t point out that I loved Blood Sugar Sex Magik when I was young? Yes. Yes I would.

Strange how a song with those lyrics can have such a nice outro.

Yeah, the Pete Doherty “lol he does drugs and throws TVs into swimming pools” media circus baffled me c. 2005. I just didn’t get why millions got obsessed and excited about something so tediously grounded in problematic rock cliches that should have been binned c. 1977.

i’m going to confess that i quite liked Dani California. haven’t heard it in quite a few years though and obviously the other singles from that album were pish (“hey oh, listen what i say oh” especially)

Obviously awful lyrics but a lot of hip-hop artists have been getting away with far worse for years

I loved RHCP when I was about 16 but I didn’t really know much about music back then and the early 00s were a bad time to be getting into rock as much of it, especially American or Kerrang! friendly stuff, was distorted by media saturation of pop punk and nu metal (the latter the reason I didn’t like Nirvana till much later in life as I blamed them for ‘fake angst Papa Roach bands.’ Siiiiiiigggghhhh…) Even then they walked a fine line between genius and shite. But it’s a long time ago and I need to move on. If they do have one positive legacy it’s that their influences and cover versions made me discover so much great music that seemed ‘obscure’ back then: Gang of Four, Parliament/Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix (I know the latter might seem surprising but I’m from the kind of small towns where people didn’t hear Led Zeppelin till they were about 20.)

I must admit I wasn’t really aware of their admissions/convictions of awfulness though - I briefly recall reading about the Spring Break incident years ago but thought they they were found innocent - and it’s really soured my feelings about their music, especially all their “blue”/innuendo lyrics which I used to think were funny but now just seem creepy as hell :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Feel like the weirdest take in this thread is ‘they suck… aside from By The Way’

It’s like reverse Biffy syndrome.

They have a handful of decent songs and Blood, Sugar seemed exciting at the time.

Good in Point Break too!

Never been much into Biffy Clyro, but doesn’t this forum have an almost consensus view that they were a great band then there was an exact, concrete point at which they “became crap?” Not sure of the exact album/single/date.

Yeah exactly. It’s puzzle basically. What everyone’s doing is ‘biffy sucked… until puzzle came along’
