I loved RHCP when I was about 16 but I didn’t really know much about music back then and the early 00s were a bad time to be getting into rock as much of it, especially American or Kerrang! friendly stuff, was distorted by media saturation of pop punk and nu metal (the latter the reason I didn’t like Nirvana till much later in life as I blamed them for ‘fake angst Papa Roach bands.’ Siiiiiiigggghhhh…) Even then they walked a fine line between genius and shite. But it’s a long time ago and I need to move on. If they do have one positive legacy it’s that their influences and cover versions made me discover so much great music that seemed ‘obscure’ back then: Gang of Four, Parliament/Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix (I know the latter might seem surprising but I’m from the kind of small towns where people didn’t hear Led Zeppelin till they were about 20.)
I must admit I wasn’t really aware of their admissions/convictions of awfulness though - I briefly recall reading about the Spring Break incident years ago but thought they they were found innocent - and it’s really soured my feelings about their music, especially all their “blue”/innuendo lyrics which I used to think were funny but now just seem creepy as hell
