Not really, it’s clearly the album that appeals to the widest audience - bit of something for everyone, more melodic, more ‘mature’ etc.
Stadium Arcadium was the real stinker, inexplicable that they made it a double with such poor material.

Cant believe they’ve had 13 US #1s though, that’s just silly.

I’m intrigued by the hatred on here. The only bands I hate as much as DiS appear to hate RHCP are Queen and U2.

I was just thinking that in some ways, they are quite like REM. Both were NME darlings for the first few albums before they were popular. Both had indecipherable muttered lyrics. Both went gargantuan in space of a couple of albums, in large part because of MTV.

After that, I think it’s fair to say that their paths diverged significantly.

Clearly they are massive dicks. Kiedis evidently had a shit and neglected childhood, so it’s not a massive surprise he turned out how he did. Can’t understand why Flea keeps getting acting gigs either.

my brother had Californication when it came out and i wanted to like it but always found it quite grating and then he got By The Way and i found it a lot less grating and liked some of the songs.

obviously haven’t heard any of the other albums in their entirety, who has?

It’s interesting, I think Kiedis has a nice voice. Not a technically great singer of course, but I like how it sounds. One of the more interesting things about his book was all the talk about how he wasn’t actually a singer and struggled massively with anything melodic, while simultaneously knowing how melodic Californication and By the Way ended up being.
