Good timing this thread as my flat recently had a little Robbie session so itās fresh in my mind.
I loved Robbie as a kid, I was the right age to unashamedly love him as a pop star and my immediate family liked him a lot too. The wheels started falling off after his āIāM RICH BEYOND MY WILDEST DREAMS!ā craic which resulted in Escapology onwards, though that album still had some great songs which detail his personal daemons in quite touching detail regardless of his success, even if it was effectively the end of his relevancy.
I forgot until returning to it recently just how much he took over Oasisās sound after they had fucked it with Be Here Now, which I guess is what kicked the feud off? But honestly, Robbie took that initial, hardly original or inspired sound (and I say this as someone who likes the first couple Oasis albums) and just made a more honest, straight-up pop version.
Some of his lyrics are very dated, cheesy and cringey 20 years later but thereās still a certain charm to him, and to be honest, those run of singles between 97-02 is pretty untouchable (āKidsā is so fucking uplifting). Struggling to go beyond a 3 at the moment due to the years of shite he has put out since and his questionable statements, but might up to a 4 later if Iām feeling general/to party balance out the inevitable kicking heās going to get.
Hereās an underrated pop-punk banger of his that I believe was on FIFA 99 or 2000
