Don’t really like his voice and have always thought the production was a bit flat on the stuff I’ve heard. There’s that glam thing where every instrument seemingly has to be playing all at once and it’s a bit dull.

Also I think I’m scarred from seeing Ferry doing a load of bad Dylan covers on Sky Arts once.

Will check out the recs in this thread though, happy to be proved wrong

“Well I’ve been up all night again?

Wavering between 4 and 5, but angling towards a 5, I think? Mother of Pearl and If There Is Something are my favourites that aren’t on a best of. Think Mother of Pearl might be my favourite overall

I unashamedly love Roxy Music - the TV hates them, so that makes listening to them even better. So many great songs and a progression through the albums where they only ever sound like themselves, yet completely change their sound in the process

Caught them live a decade or so ago which was super exciting - they were pretty half arsed and rubbish…

Also Bryan Ferry is a Tory, Nazi apologising, fox hunt supporting bellend. As such, I’m afraid I can’t give them any higher than a FIVE :+1:

Dunno

Yeah I saw them at Lovebox and was so disappointed. Not the ideal setting for them admittedly but I think I might have even left before the end.

Never listened to them. Have no desire to. So i’ll give them -17.

DJ played Love is the Drug at my wedding and it was really fun.

Started working through their discography based on recs from @bodyinthethames last year. the first few records are great but I gave up after a little while (by manifesto I think?) - will have to check out Avalon based on the recs ITT tho.

Did anyone else have a weird formative sexual experience with their parents copy of Country Life or was it just me?

5/5

Pyjamarama is a great song. If I’ve heard any others, I’ve completely erased them from my mind. Will have a listen today.

Got the debut on, Chance Meeting has an almost post rock sound to it

Roxy Music, FFO: Godspeed and fox hunting

Meh, 1

I’ve only heard the singles but I’ve always hated them, also Bryan Ferry is a massive tory so it’s a 1 i’m afraid

Great band.

Kinda feel like Bryan Ferry is a massive tit, but weirdly it kinda helps strengthen his overall style. Probably because he’s always playing the sleazy matinee crooner type.

Really like the arty early stuff with Eno, but think the glossy later stuff is decent too. Probably a bit ahead of their time with that, as much as they were with the debut and follow up?

Shout out to Ferry’s solo stuff, which contains some decent songs. Particularly like this cover:

So if my song choice for the bass round of Music League fails to win many points, this thread is reminding me that I really should have submitted “Out Of The Blue”.

In an alternative dimension Brian Eno never left Roxy Music and they recorded this together as a massive pop album. Still great, but would love to hear it with more of the big stomping glam sheen Roxy Music had on those first few albums.

I could probably just copy & paste this as you hit most of the nails square on the head

I will add though that even through the slightly less good albums there are first rate singles. I think ‘Over You’ is probably my favourite Roxy Music song

3 and a half minutes of propulsive pop perfection with no chorus and undoubtedly the best 6 bar build up and release in contemporary music

Don’t like the shiny slick production & 80s sax? Don’t worry, House of Love copied the entire arrangement with indie guitars for Christine

If you want a document of the live band kicking arse I highly recommend ‘Heart Still Beating’ which is a recording of a 1982 concert in France. I love it so much even if it might be considered quite mainstream sounding in hindsight it was Roxy Music that really invented that sound

I love them, big band for me growing up, gonna give them a 5

I definitely don’t hate any of their records and I quite like the live record. Manifesto is definitely the weakest album but even that has Dance Away which is great.

I do feel that Manifesto and Flesh and Blood are the sound of them groping for the sound they perfected on Avalon so it was all worth it in the end.

They’re a 3/5 for me.

Some greats songs amongst their catalogue. Saw Bryan Ferry at Shepherds Bush maybe ten years ago. Good gig.
