I should also mention that Yo La Tengo slot in between Pulp and Elliott Smith.
Siouxsie & the Banshees is the 200th HGATR! What a journey! Thanks @anon19035908

Where’s a good place to start for someone who only knows the name?

Looking at the list of songs. I did not previously know that Slowdive’s band name came from a Siouxsie & The Banshees song title.

yay great choice.
brilliant and massively influential band that are weirdly underrated these days. really deep back catalogue with loads of bangers, proper great guitarist in john mcgeoch (when he was with them), constantly evolving sound and one of the best frontpeople ever

big 5

gonna listen to them all day

maybe kaleidoscope and then juju

5/5 from me, like Shrewbie said, strange that they don’t get the recognition they really deserve. Great band and highly influential. Kaleidoscope and Juju are brilliant records.

Great pick! I’ll write more later on, but to answer @octobadger, their stuff loosely falls into three periods - the first couple of albums are punk / post punk, then they go a bit more goth through the eighties, and they wind up as a kind of cinematic twisted pop act. . The best records from each of those periods are The Scream, Juju and Peepshow respectively so give those a go, or even a hits compilation to get the full flavour.

As upthread, strangely absent from conversations these days - seem to have been ignored by 6 music’s canonisation of the era they sprung from. I probably don’t know them well enough to give a 5, but easily a 4.

Also, not a huge Weeknd fan, but this is pretty undeniable:

First band I ever saw live when I was 16.

Massively underrated band. What a guitarist John McGeoch was.

I like the Banshees but I didn’t listen to them that much. I’m not mad keen on Siouxsie’s voice on the early records although I like it a lot later on. The best period is definitely that with the amazing John McGeoch on guitar although the two records with Robert Smith are good too. Overall I would say they are a band that I admire more than love, for some reason they’ve never really made a profound emotional connection with me. They’re a 3.5 band for me and in the end I decided to round up, mainly because of the guitar at the start of Spellbound, which merits a 5 on its own.

Gonna write up later but watch this video of this brilliant song and tell me that she is not the best Catwoman that never was.
