Are there other Slayer songs that are more explicitly anti-Nazi than Angel of Death? From the few listens of that song and a read through of the lyrics it honestly feels more “neutral observer” or ambivalent than a damning criticism of Mengele. A few negative descriptors of him tucked in between about a trillion other words?

However I’ve only listened to two and a half albums of theirs so fully prepared to admit fault if I’ve missed another song of theirs that’s more openly critical. Not saying Angel of Death is “pro”-Nazi but I couldn’t really blame anyone for wondering if they heard that song and then found out the band in question covered another song called “Guilty of Being White”

ffs, I thought I’d get to do the work I didn’t do yesterday because of this thread, but it’s still going!!

Much as I’ve defended them in this thread, really don’t think that Angel of Death is a damning criticism of Mengele. I think if you asked Slayer they’d say it wasn’t intended to be either. Far more of a ‘neutral observer’ aspect to it, like you say. From memory, I think Kerry King was interested in the period and wrote songs about it. When asked why he wasn’t more condemning he responded that he felt it was obvious that the Nazi regime was horrific and he didn’t feel like he needed to spell that out to people. That said, think the best thing you can say about some of the lyrics is that they are ill advised. Very much of the view that writing a song about Mengele that isn’t overtly critical does not make them a Nazi band though, particularly when their songs cover many other areas and themes.

The song that @Kallgeese talks about upthread - Crooked Cross - is more critical of the mindset of people that can ultimately lead to situations like Nazi Germany and can be viewed as more outright critical of Nazism than Angel of Death.

What a thread! Glad it finally happened! Only really know Reign In Blood, but will do some further listening for sure (whilst drinking cans of Stella in the shower of course).

Raining Blood will always be my favourite track, but I also really dig Postmortem, love the tempo changes and then it turns into complete chaos at around 2:44, with the rainstorm sound effects nicely segueing into Raining Blood, great stuff!

They also appeared on a favourite Atari Teenage Riot track of mine

Can we talk a bit about how great Dave Lombardo is?

Spawn was okay when it came out and I was an easily impressed child.
The cgi was very good for the time I think.
Crazy they managed to rope Martin Sheen into it.
Reckon a reboot could do well.

Close the song poll already!

He’s the absolute greatest and unlike Tom Araya, a very, very solid dude

If I’d seen it as a child I’d probably agree but I was 29 when I saw it!

I wonder if Martin Sheen puts it on his CV?! It still amazes me that the fat clown was played by John Leguziamo, totally unrecognisable!

Just picturing him as the Clown in Romeo and Julie now.
