Like, I know you don’t like them, but steely Dan do this in spades. SPADES I tell ya. Scuzzy, dark, seedy lyrics. Smoother than silk production. It’s literally why I love them so much.

Not for me clive. You can have all the mildly prickly lyrics you like but if it’s produced with the slickness of an oil spill on an ice rink it’s just not got the holy-fuck-what-is-happening-in-my-life grit I need in a shower song.

like the smoothness is intentionally in service of highlighting the sleaze and patheticness of the characters in the same way. Pulp would be crap if they were an angry punk band and all the pop sheen was stripped away, same with Steely Dan although of course the musicianship is leagues better with Steely Dan.
