The second is pretty poor and feels like he was forced to do it for contractual reasons, which he more or less admits in the opening chapter.

had a big britpop listening phase as a 15 year old and of all the big records dog man star was by far the one I was most into. again not been back that much since, know their last couple of records have been massively lauded and they sound pretty good but kind of feel like the moment’s passed for me. will listen to them a bit today anyway

probs give them a 3, same as I think I gave pulp and oasis

I’ve gone with a 3:

  • Animal Nitrate was a gateway song for me - that, and Do You Remember The First Time?
  • They had a handful of very, very strong singles around that time. The Wild Ones still makes me well up a little.
  • Nevertheless, I don’t really ever listen to them these days. And after a while, Bernard Butler’s guitar playing gets on my nerves (it’s just too… busy).

If we were doing marks out of ten I’d have rounded a 6.8 up to a 7, but as it is, I’m rounding a 3.4 down to a 3.

Apparently I’d listen to coming up on repeat when I was 4/5 years old.

Like a handful of songs but not really my bag. 2.

First album was great, then Dog Man Star blew it away. I can completely understand why people dont like them, but Brett is at his best when he has sweeping and earnest drama as his background. This Asphalt World is a great, great track, rolling into The Next Life for a double punch. Oooof.
For me, they lost a lot when they got a poppier Britpop sound and Brett got clean (good for him though!) He came across as needy and the couple of times I saw them live it was just too much.
(Note that I also thought this about Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode. He was like watching a hyperactive Liza Minelli)

The recent couple of albums have gone back to the drama I enjoy from Suede. The Blue Hour is a really enjoyable listen.

Some great early b-sides too.

Absolutely loved Dog Man Star for a while as a teenager, but nothing after that really hit, to the point I have no interest in hearing their more recent stuff. I guess they feel very much of a time and place to me. 3 on the strength of those first couple of albums though.

Generous 2 from me purely as I have some nice teenage memories related to the first single. Debut album was really disappointing though and everything after awful imo.

This is true. Also if you read an account of Britpop (or whatever) you realise that Butler in Suede is exactly the same as Domhnall Gleeson in Frank.

A happy 4 from me. An absolute treasure trove of singles from their first run and actually their reunion has yielded not just good records but some fucking sterling shows as well - their fans are mental which helps.

Never massive on the debut but Dog Man Star is brilliant. Cause I was the right age for it, Coming Up is the one for me, love all the plastic production how much they ham it up and lets be honest, they make writing those songs sound easy. Mrs Stack and I enjoy getting pissed and wailing along to Saturday Night, By The Sea is still gorgeous and The Chemistry Between is is your classic overblown penultimate track (yeah Asphalt World, I know). I saw them touring Head Music and it was great but that record is like 40% amazing hollowed out coke comedown, 60% garbage hence the docked point.

The 2 disc greatest hits would be pretty much everything you need if it covered Night Thoughts.

Surprised at some of the low scores here. I reckon you could make a decent case for saying that a) they were the best mainstream guitar band that came out of Britain in the 90s (I’m certainly more likely to listen to them these days than I am Blur, Oasis or Pulp) and b) they have pulled off maybe the greatest comeback in rock history - not many acts have split and then come back with three quality albums in a row, ones that are as artistically ambitious and musically successful as their best work. And they were spectacular at Glastonbury 2015

A 4 for me. Before seeing them do Night Thoughts live, which was one of the best gigs I’ve been to in the last 10 years, I hadn’t rweally thought about them in 20+ years. The first album was the first guitar album I ‘owned’, but while I liked some of their subsequent singles I didn’t buy any of the 90s albums. After that gig though, I bought Night Thoughts and then went back to Dog Man Star which is a 5. The first album is decent and Sci-fi Lullabies has some great stuff on it. Coming Up is hit and miss and I haven’t listened to the later albums from their first run. The Blue Hour is very good, but not quite on the level of Night Thoughts.

Never heard them. My Mum calls them “Swede” for some reason.

One of my favourite bands. First three albums are stunners, Coming Up probably in my top twenty of all time, just pure sleazy scumbag glam weirdness.

Saw them on my stag do and had a bloody good cry to By The Sea surrounded by my best friends.

Brett Anderson’s books are also quite good.

4/5 because Head Music to Bloodsports are quite shit.

I’ve gone for a 4. Strange band live their first two and then third is OK. Then love their most recent two with the 3rd most recent being OK. Middle ones shit though. Like a career in symmetry
