Brave brave choice. Anyway, I like sunn, but I don’t really listen to them. Monoliths is their best imo, but I like that collab they did with Boris. Don’t know what I’ll score them yet

More like a ‘we’re starting to run out of artists’ choice!

Oh yes! I am here for this HGATR!

I like Sunn. :raised_hands: A band I listen to often enough, have been able to see live a few times and certainly have thoughts on. I’ve just woke up so I’m gonna have a coffee, ponder and return with a score and some more comments which are more (hopefully) interesting.

Once paid about £20 (for context, in about 2006) for a copy of Black One because i’d heard all about this challenging drone band that can make you shit yourself. Then spent 5 minutes explaining to record shop guy what ‘brown sound’ was purported to be.

Anyway, as far as the music goes, don’t mind Black One and Monoliths but I’m afraid it all sounds basically the same to me.

Enjoy the drama and mythos around them. Have never seen live but would 100% watch them if at a festival (no idea how they’ve not played any festivals I’ve been to yet).

I just can’t imagine ever putting them on for a listen round the house or not being bored after 10 minutes of seeing them

Oh so Peter Gabriel’s finally on the horizon then? Thank fuck.

Voted Life Metal as best album because it’s got the best cover. I kind of think of them as more an art project than a band. I enjoy the vibe, love the concept and all the trappings, very rarely feel the need to actually listen to them.

I’m quite happy to go through the “who do we want” thread and turn it into a simple list for you if you like. These threads are the best thing about this site and I don’t ever want them to stop, not even when we’re down to arguing which is the best of the two demo tapes made by some bunch of Lithuanian shoegazers who broke up before they ever released a proper record.

liked it that one time when the guy dressed as a tree had lazer fingers.

but yes. great band. taking music to its logical conclusion. when Im in the mood it does something no other music does.

this is a fantastic song. the way the sound has that pull and atmosphere to it along with the vocals. perfect.

When it works and you’re in the zone they are outstanding but equally it can be pretty dull when you’re not in the mood. First time i saw them was in a little theatre in the custard factory brum in 2004 i think and it was amazing. It was a small room with comfy chairs which was a real plus, had a nice smoke beforehand then settled down - unsure what to expect beyond “it sounds like earth 2”. Then the dry ice came with the robed figures and the slow throb into auditory overload began. IT was devastating, transcending and brilliant. I was entranced for the whole show and it still remains the best time i’ve seen them by a mile.

They’ve been louder since, and good on occasion - the show with earth was great, and as a 90s BM nerd seeing Atilla live when he was still somewhat of a mystery was exciting but never quite captured the magic again. Sometimes it’s due to timing - appearing at festivals late/in the middle of the night at party o’clock is never going to work and sometimes it doesn’t seem to click - either with them or me. I did enjoy them fighting at ATP though, and the smoke alarms

The record they did in the church in Norway (Domkirke) is well worth a listen and sounds great with the organ, but again, it’s not often i’m in the mood for a sunn o))) record in the lounge. I thought Kannon was a really nice album to listen to though.

Shout out for the artwork/records also. It can be a stinker that they cost a lot but the effort and presentation that goes into the art is pretty special, and they can be beautiful. The whole aesthetic is something i can get on board with. The Domkirke record for instance is lovely.

Think i’ll probably go for a 4 on balance - when the universe aligns for them and the listener it can be pretty special (just a shame that more often than not that doesn’t happen!)

gonna be a real shame that no one is gonna have one of those replies where they reveal they got married walking down the aisle to Sunn o))) etc.

Can’t beat this if you’re in the mood for some overblown pomposity

A band I should like in theory a lot more than I do in practice - 3

I’ve gone for a 4 because a perfect score seems a bit too much of a reach, but I do like me some Sunn and the o)))s

I’m giving them a 5 because I listened to Life Metal in full whilst doing the washing up and it was properly transcendent.

This sounds really pretentious but drone metal done right can be primal and meditative in a way, say, Brian Eno can’t. Ear-splitting ambient.

Straight 5. It’s not music I would just stick on around the house really but then it doesn’t pretend to be so I’m not gonna judge it that way. When I’m in the mood there’s not a lot that comes close.

Didn’t walk down the aisle to Sunn but did get drunk and tell my then girlfriend that we were gonna get married one day after a Sunn show. She dumped me <6 months later.
