Apparently Bobby Brown and Brian Harvey were approached to sing the verses on Juxtaposed but turned it down.

Might put Radiator on this afternoon and see what happens. I literally can’t remember the last time I listened to SFA.

Deleted cos I bang that drum wayyyy too often and even I’m bored of it.

Instead, here’s Sarn Helen:

BeachyBeatleBritPoppy as I recall (Radiator). I should listen to them further is what this thread is giving me.

know very little of their output, have for years meaning to spend some time with them but for whatever reason never get round to it. abstain/5

It’s not nails down a chalkboard or anything but I just don’t think he’s much of a singer. Also realising this can be a real dealbreaker for me!

Strong vibes of this re 'Demons". Right generation too. Hmm.

Fair enough! It just surprised me that’s all.

I enjoyed Radiator and the other early one when I was in my early twenties, they had quite an unusual energetic sound but at some point they really lost it or perhaps it was just forgettable music that had a fresh aesthetic when you are young and don’t know much about music.

Bit later I got into Gorky’s and realised that you could take that kind of quirky welsh psychedelic aesthetic and also write emotionally resonant songs, never really looked back to Super Furry Animals after that.

Mountain People is a good song but for the most part it seemed to me like their tracks aren’t about anything and leave no lasting impression, all style over substance and the style either got old or I grew out of it.

One thing I really don’t understand is why they put really boring string parts and other production bloat over everything?

Can’t get this to play on here at the moment.

Demons sounds a hell of a lot like it though!

Controversial sort of half thought-through thought- did SFA seem particularly interesting because they emerged at a time when so much British guitar music was even more bland and meat and potatoes than it normally is?

  1. I don’t think they do - not over everything
  2. But where they do, I don’t think they’re anywhere near as guilty as the 90s heavyweight peers (some Blur and Pulp output for example).

or maybe they’re all big Eagles fans

Or do people think of SFA as boring and derivative because they associate them with that era?
