Gary Barlow has real Arnold Rimmer vibes in that pic. Maybe that’s where he’s at: Gary Barlow is actually Arnold Rimmer in an alternate universe where he retains the officiousness of original Rimmer but obtains the confidence and success of Ace Rimmer. And learns to write songs.

They have done a LOT of singles since they reformed, not that this is unusual but it is always a bit weird for me when bands have reformed and seemingly have had a longer career in that weird twilight world where no one really gives much of a fuck. Have Pixies been reformed for longer than they were originally around yet? Dinosaur Jr have certainly released a lot more material since reforming than I had thought.

Better than Kanye. 2/5

Gonna go with 2. They were good fun in the early days and had a run of genuinely good singles around Back For Good / Never Forget. Would be higher than 2, but for (a) Barlow being a bit of a prick (b) Robbie no longer being in the band and (c) a bunch of singles post-Shine that don’t exist.

For comparison, East 17 would be a 3, and Westlife a turgid 1.

5/5 for that photo

1/5 for the music. There were one or two decent singles like Back For Good or Never Forget, but even those faint specks of light have been ruined by overplaying.

1/5 for the tax dodging

1/5 for Gary Barlow coming across like a total nob at all times

Honestly just have never been able to get into them.

I think Shine might be one of my least favourite songs this century, a garish jazz handing load of cack. 3 of the 5 give me bad vibes and I don’t even think Back for good is a decent song, was always a bit confused that it was held up as a classic bit of 90’s pop, it’s dreary. Most of their songs are dreary, even their supposed bangers are boring. Robbie was well out of it.

Look at this pair of Voigt-Kampff failures.

Might have stretched a 2 for a couple of decent pop songs in the 90s but that small amount of credit is obviously written off by them being awful people, especially Barlow

Weird that Robbie Williams seems now to be the least terrible one.

Annoyed me as a child, annoyed me when they returned. 1/5 maybe upped after watching their Nirvana cover with Gary’s hilarious vest ripping

Yep still funny 2/5

Big fan of how much that sounds like every other school band around the time, covering Nirvana - from the weedy guitar sound to the way that nobody really knows how to bring the song down from the loud intro to the quiet verse

My sister was really into them in the 90s, which made me automatically hate them. They do have a handful of undenial bangers from that period though (Pray is legit brilliant). Everything they’ve done since they’ve reformed has been the dreariest, mind-numbing mid tempo sludge imaginable and Barlow and that other one seem like absolute ballbags. Hmmm. A generous 2.
