The whole thing has an endearing sense of them just doing whatever the hell they wanted to do.

Yes it does and I’ve never felt the need to invest time with any of their other albums although I know one is considered by many as the best album of all-time. I think it’s the generational gap - but there’s something about Surf’s Up that appeals.

The lovely thing about @bornin69x 's post here is the time between saying this from the initial prompt for anyone to give it a listen. He’s actually gone away and listened to it for a while, gotten into it - and then come back to say this. Really nice post and a nice boost in what are difficult times for most of us. Thank you.

Stating the obvious here, but the Beach Boys are perfect good weather music aren’t they

Great stuff! I find myself listening to it more than Pet Sounds these days

If you do fancy one other album with a similar mish-mash of really good songs, and slightly odd stuff, then Holland is definitely worth a look.

Was the last album of their post-Smile/pre-Oldies phase, and has (A) some really good songs on, and (B) a separate EP of Brian telling a weird story about a magic radio.

Not quite on Surf’s Up’s level, but still pretty great.

Will investigate. Thank you.

Needless late night update before bed here and I’ve just listened to Surf’s Up in full again after todays prompts. I’m never going to change my take that Lookin’ At Tomorrow is the stand out, but the album is supremely consistent and on tonights listen Disney Girls stood out a lot. That gentle gloom somehow full of joy and hope. What an album.

I should and will investigate more of their records. Music people. Music.

Disney Girls is amazing - it’s the first song on the album (apart from the title track) that grabbed me.

My favourite changes almost every time I listen to it. It’s one of those albums where even the tracks that are a bit iffy ( e.g. Student Demonstration Time) contribute to the whole.

I enjoyed Student Demonstration Time last night, that’s the 12 bar blues one I think (could be wrong, going from memory) and I was thinking it hit a note with the news from America at the moment. Anyway, fabulous album. No real duds and it hangs together really well.

lold at this from van dyke parks

mad how Jan and Dean and Beach Boys had exactly the same sound in the early 60s. Was gonna say BB ripped them off but it seems it was a bit more mutual than that. Anyway, where else am I gonna get to post this lovely slice:

Lovely work

Of all people, you just knew Mike Love would be a Trump guy.

Mike Love is the fucking archetype of the Boomer MAGA dickhead. He’s been riding that particular wave since at least 1985, looking sleazier and sleazier all the while.

Van Dyke Parks is a good and nice guy, though, and I’m glad he’s taking the piss of him

Oh yeah, that beef is nearly 60 years old. Love is the luckiest man alive that the Wilson’s were his cousins.
