The challenge on the album poll is that there’s such a timeless, all time objective great there that any other option feels like being deliberately contrary or scoring indie points.

Pet Sounds gets more than enough praise already, so although there are a couple patchy moments, Surf’s Up has three of the best songs of all time in Feel Flows, Til I Die and Surf’s Up. For all its genius/consistency, I don’t think PS has any individual high points that match this trio for me.

On top of that it also has other excellent non-Brian cuts on Disney Girls and Long Promised Road, a great bit of Brian surrealness in A Day In The Life of a Tree, there’s that weird murky cover making it clear that despite the album title we’re in a very different place from the early clean cut surfer boy image and the arrangements are great throughout too with all the moogs, organs and reverse vocals etc. It just all round felt like it has more of an edge and I’m happy to sacrifice some consistency and polish for that.

My dad isn’t massively into 60s ā€œcanonā€ albums but he seemed to always have Pet Sounds on in the car when we went on childhood holidays. The absolute business.

A friend who’s in quite a heavy punk band and absolutely spurns everything else before 1976 and after when Elvis went off to make bad films also says it’s one of his band’s biggest inspirations!

The cover is actually quite good, worth a listen!

Easy one this…

4/5

One deducted for Mike Love

At their very best they’re about as magical and as evocative as pop music has gotten so far imo. ā€˜Pet Sounds’ is near perfect and ā€˜Smile’ is only slightly undone by its over reaching ambition but ā€˜Today’, ā€˜Sunflower’, and ā€˜Surf’s Up’ are also very good- to-brilliant albums. ā€˜Friends’, ā€˜20/20’ and ā€˜Holland’ have great moments too. Incredible singles band obviously.

Not sure anyone has ever made avant garde music as beautiful and as listenable as Beach Boys at their peak. 5/5

I don’t like the beach and I’m ambivalent about boys but I think the Beach Boys are largely fine 3/5

Flipping between a two and a three. Just a bit meh, I reckon. Some undeniable moments, but too often on the wrong side of the big line marked ā€œschmaltzā€ for me and the last forty or so years of their career is an object lesson in how not to manage a legacy.

Your post has made me realise I’ve probably underrated ā€˜Surfs Up’. One of those records I always forget how good it is until I put it on but thinking about it ā€˜Student Demonstration Time’ is the only stinker, everything else is top drawer really. Just lacks a bit of the focus of ā€˜Pet Sounds’ but you’re gonna get that when there’s 5 dudes pitching in with material instead of one visionary overseeing the whole thing.

Pet Sounds is probably the greatest album ever made. No pop/rock album has ever gotten close to those melodies. They never grow tired. It’ll never be bettered.

There is another version of the Status Boys? Quo Beach? with added Cilla and no Wilson

The Beach Boys Love You is one of the oddest albums ever. Fucking brilliant but odd as hell. All those big honking seventies synths.

Gotta be a 5. Their highs are just some of the best music ever. Never, ever tire of their straight up early pop stuff. Those harmonies man. Something like I Get Around… you know it’s absolute solid gold in the first 10 seconds.

A little gem from 1970:

To my shame, I’ve never listened to Surfs Up. I’ll put that right.

I think Pet Sounds is wildly overrated. I think it’s fine and has undeniable moments, but never does it as a whole for me.

Evidently! Also, any football in our house gets watched on mute (brother gets angry at commentators).
