Don’t recognise a single song there

A few absolute bangers, a fair bit of forgettable stodge. Tim Burgess seems bang into music so fair play. I reckon he’s definitely wearing a wig these days though.

Never been that fussed by them. Until Tim Burgess moved down south a few years back there was a point were I saw him at every gig I went to in Manchester for about 4 years.

5!

Really good singles band imo. Tellin’ Stories is a good album too but they never made at least one truly great record like most of their Britpop-era peers did. Still listen to their Best Of a fair bit but maybe I’m just stuck in the past. 3/5 might up to a 4.

Tim Burgess’ autobiography is very good also and he seems like a good egg.

Never knowingly heard them I don’t think

The only one of the bands I was mad in to at about 15/16 I still listen to now. That comp doesn’t really do justice to the singles they put out up to and including Us & Us Only, and that little run of albums from the self-titled to Us & Us Only is pretty much front to back excellent. Great live too. I haven’t kept up with everything they’ve done since, but Modern Nature’s decent and Tim’s solo stuff is worth checking out, especially Oh No I Love You, which is a colab with Kurt Wagner. It’s a 4 for me, Clive.

Was never fussed with the studio albums but this best of was one of my most played albums from 1998 - 2000, lots of decent tunes. 3 seems fair.

4 for me. Always a special place in my heart for The Charlatans. Their Northwich connections made them a ‘home team’ band for lots of us growing up in mid-Cheshire. Also my first gig, at Manchester Academy in 1995. For me, it was the swirling Hammond Organ sound that Rob Collins brought to the band that made them so great, so I love the first four albums, not so into stuff from Tellin Stories onwards, though there are great moments.

The ‘Forever’ compilation doesn’t really capture all their best songs, I reckon. I went for Weirdo from that list, but there are a few other ‘big’ Charlatans I’d have gone for instead - Then, Opportunity, I Never Want An Easy Life…, and even Sproston Green as the regular live set closer and reminder of lots of happy gig memories.

So good.

Seems strange that of the biggest bands of that era (Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, James etc), The Charlatans were the ones who’ve probably stood the test of time the best. Was really into them in 1997 but haven’t gone out of my way to listen to them for years now. That run of singles up to Forever is excellent.

3.5/5, rounded to 4 because Tim Burgess seems like a good egg.

Yes!

Going to give them a 4 but actually I don’t really know that much by them, they just feel so important to my student years and stuff around that.

Prefer My Chemical Romance
