I’m another one who bought London Calling, probably in Fopp for like £3, on the premise it would change my life, listened to it and was like “well yeah, it’s quite good I guess”. No real affection for them but accept they’re good and they had some decent songs. 3/5

I hate myself for this but, massive guilty pleasure song.

If you don’t rate them learn music tbh

Didn’t expect that a few 3/5 for them would irk me so much but here we are

Pretty much word for word this. Have to admit I don’t listen to them all that much these days, and I find most of the ‘last gang in town’ / ‘only band that matters’ shtick that seems to follow them around pretty wearying, but impossible to give them anything less than a 5 really. Not much to add to what’s already been said, but on top of their own music, I loved the way they’d constantly use their fame and position to bring through other artists, and a lot of their collaboration work was done intending to shine a light on (then) developing scenes that their more traditional fans might not have been aware of (roots reggae and early hip hop in particular). Spot on politically, and Joe Strummer in particular seemed like a genuinely great guy. Absolutely deserve their place in the highest tier of bands that the UK has ever produced.

Probably the best band this band has ever produced. 100/5. This is one of my favourite clips by anyone (0:53!)

Some great songs that haven’t been mentioned yet - Bankrobber, Armagideon Time (and it’s dubs), One More Time, The Call Up…

Saw Joe Strummer at the Wedgewood Rooms about the time the first Mescaleros album came out, and it was amazing.

Re rarities, I have this, which is good

There’s also a decent live recording of a gig in Jamaica going round, which you can probably find in the usual places.

Just to reiterate, 200/5.

Going to up my score to 2 as the music board is a kinder gentler hgatr and I like rock the casbah

Can’t edit any more, but want to add that if you don’t find that Clampdown clip just a little bit thrilling then it’s Val Doonican and Ovaltine for you from now on.

Also, Joe had a short lived project called Latino Rockabilly War that put out one 12” - not his greatest work but worth a listen, as is the Walker soundtrack he did. And a shout out for Mick Jones and BAD, whose best moments were very good indeed.

Fuck it, 300/5

My ex saw lots and lots of bands in the 70s . For her The Clash and The Jam were the best by a long way.

Please can we not do a The Jam one of these, I don’t want to have to leave the boards in disgust when they get less than 5/5

Punk is about having the free spirit and audacity to have the ability to produce such variation imo, making The Clash arguably the most punk of that entire era. Personally prefer Talking Heads on that basis but the door for the whole “post-” punk doesn’t happen without The Clash.

AND YET, I’ve still never been that bothered about The Clash, and this is coming from a self-professed punk

I am looking forward to checking out the exhibition at London museum however, but they’ve just never really clicked for me. London Calling is an amazing song though, one of the all time great UK singles

I’d keep them there. They generate more interest and get some new (or more likely, old) faces involved in the conversation on music.

Keep them in the music board. I mean its music discussion innit. People sitting in the music forum primarily are more inclined to talk about music non?

Do people really not move from the music board to the social and vice versa?

I’d say 95% of the Social Board don’t know we exist here.

Votes have been quite high so far on the music board but discussion is slower.
