I tend not to come in these threads as they’re on like 200 posts by the time I see them and I don’t like jumping in a thread if I don’t have the time to read what’s come before (I’m sure my damehood’s in the post) but The Cribs are a special case (plus I got in the thread early cos I’ve avoiding work).

Anyway I definitely wrote them off as landfill indie but with some decent tunes you can shout along to at an indie disco, but my husband was a mega fan when I first met him as he’s from the area and grew up going to their first few albums’ worth of gigs before they got big with MNWNW. I was surprised when he said they were more punk than indie and probably laughed at the thought of it as I’d put them in the same basket as The Wombats etc (sorry Jarmans) but he got me to see them live with him and it totally clicked. I’ve probably seen them the most out of any band which is weird to think about as while I’m a fan I wouldn’t say I’m a Cribs ultra but it’s always such a great time. Obviously they’re also a GBOL too.

It’s difficult to recommend a ā€œbestā€ album for anyone who’s Cribs-curious as they kind of jump from influence to influence, like the self-titled debut and Night Network are essentially them paying homage to a lot of 60s girl group music, but For All My Sisters is full of fun pop bangers (and some tosh tbh but the good stuff is really good) and In The Belly of the Brazen Bull was my favourite sad-lads album for a good while.

Their best tunes are up there with the best of any other band from the same era

There’s one for Bill Nelson of Be-bop Deluxe too.

They’re actually from Netherton, which is kind of a satellite village of Wakefield. It used to be called Nether Shitlington.

It’s like when people tried to claim Embrace were from Brighouse - they’re very territorial in West Yorkshire when it comes to landfill indie.

Think really Wakefield’s metropolitan borough is way bigger than it has any right to be. No way if you’re from somewhere like Pontefract are you saying you’re from Wakefield. Too big for its boots imo.

Dont call them The Five Towns for nothing

The Cribs should do a Beastie Boys ā€˜To The 5 Towns’ type album, a love letter to Xscape, power stations and rugby league.

Biggest city without a professional football team or some shit

Quite enjoying how many people just assumed they were shit then liked them when they listened.

This is true, makes me proud

The Wakefield Express for some reason often puts up pictures from nights out from 10-15 years ago and you can often seen one of the Jarmans in a picture at the indie club

Ross is in the thumbnail here

I think I recognise Chris but no idea where from or how

He was one of the louder than bombs lot who booked all the bands that played there.
Went to a beer fest with him last year.

Ah that will probably be why! I’m in one of these galleries, in Zone

A massive 2

Blame the Pigeon Detectives I guess

:grinning::rofl:
I’ve disappointingly been in none of them.
Used to go to Escobar at least once a week and went to nearly every gig there.
Great little scene
