The respected elder statesmen thing seemed to come in around their self titled album in 2004 and I guess with the post punk revival they were a big influence on those younger bands. They’ve stayed in exactly the same place since Bloodflowers, that’s what I find a bit odd about them. Guess it’s just getting older but their first decade or so was so full of tumult and change and now they’re just stuck and have been for an age. I think I’m expecting too much of them really.
Agree about the WMS b-sides, there’s at least 4 from this period that are great. A Pink Dream should have definitely been on the album, and probably a single. It does that giddy breathless Cure pop thing so well, I prefer it to, say, Mint Car anyway.
Yes, all great! I’m really fond of the 13th, and Treasure too, remember recording that to tape and moping around with it on feeling happily glum.
