Take it with a bucket of salt, but Robert Smith was apparently on the radio this week saying there’s a new solo album (Metal Machine Music-style noise), a ‘doom-and-gloom’ Cure album and a poppier Cure album ready to go.

“Probably in about six weeks’ time I’ll be able to say when everything’s coming out and what we’re doing next year and everything"

This is interesting but I think you’re right about a bucket of salt, Robert loves two things, collaborations and announcing but not releasing things. Will come back in six weeks and hopefully tuck into some humble pie.

I think the doom and gloom album was recorded the same time as 4:13 dream, so it’s sat on a shelf for 13 years, it’ll still have Pearl on it. Wonder if it’s been rerecorded or a different thing altogether, or if it exists at all.

The Wish reissue should have come out 10 years ago. That’s something I think about fairly regularly, where is the Wish reissue? And more pressingly why do I care? It’ll have some ropey demo’s and a bunch of stuff I’ve probably heard but I still google it every so often. Typing this I think it’s me with the problem not Bob.

That Chvrches song is quite likeable

Wish is the album that most needed a remaster — so, so quiet! — but I bet it’ll sound no different to the original release.

It probably won’t, be completely inessential yet I still really want it! It’s my favourite cure album, I think their last great one, love that whole era. Just checked and it turns 30 next April so :crossed_fingers:

OMG!

The ‘Wish’ reissue is becoming a mythical object. Smith said it was all done and ready to be released about 3 years ago!

I think it will happen next year, surely he won’t miss the 30th Anniversary? I received a copy of Wild Mood Swings in the post today, I got rid of my old cd in 2004 when he first announced the reissue campaign thinking I’d just pick up the new edition with all the sweet bonus tracks, what a great idea. Got rid of all my Cure cd’s in one go (but kept Wish!). 17 years ago! Robert Smith is ridiculous. I am ridiculous.

Quite looking forward to listening to it again. Can Club America really be as bad as I remember?

remember reading on teletext the band would split up in the early 2000’s because he didnt want to be in a band in his 40s

I actually did the same thing with both ‘Wish’ & ‘Wild Mood Swings’ as i thought re-issues would be just around the corner. ‘Wild Mood Swings’ isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. Some of the b-sides from that era are great, so it could have been a much better album if they had replaced stuff like ‘Club America’ and ‘Round & Round & Round & Round’ with a couple of B-sides. I remember thinking ‘Club America’ sounded a bit like Tin Machine! Remember how out of fashion The Cure seemed around the time of ‘Wild Mood Swings’? Weird to think back now that they are respected elder statesmen!

Wild Mood Swings has Want, This Is A Lie and Jupiter Crash which are three of my favourite Cure songs, so I’ll never hate on it.

He was always really weird about his age, remember reading early interviews where he was going on about how old and jaded and over-the-hill he felt at the age of 21. (I don’t recommend reading early Smith interviews, he talks a powerful amount of rubbish)

plus this one!

The respected elder statesmen thing seemed to come in around their self titled album in 2004 and I guess with the post punk revival they were a big influence on those younger bands. They’ve stayed in exactly the same place since Bloodflowers, that’s what I find a bit odd about them. Guess it’s just getting older but their first decade or so was so full of tumult and change and now they’re just stuck and have been for an age. I think I’m expecting too much of them really.

Agree about the WMS b-sides, there’s at least 4 from this period that are great. A Pink Dream should have definitely been on the album, and probably a single. It does that giddy breathless Cure pop thing so well, I prefer it to, say, Mint Car anyway.

Yes, all great! I’m really fond of the 13th, and Treasure too, remember recording that to tape and moping around with it on feeling happily glum.

I enjoyed that new Chvrch’s track so much I decided to make a playlist of Robert Smith’s collaborations.
I hadn’t heard most of these, from Eat Static to Blink-182 there’s an impressive mix of bands here.

Oh, if I’ve missed something, please let me know.

Nice! He also sang on two of the tracks on the The Glove album :+1:

I though he was a full time member of the Glove.

Woah, there’s a lot, not heard about half of them. This one sprang to mind

Not strictly a guest spot but a flimsy enough reason to post this remix Robert did

Did he do many remixes? This is the only one I’ve ever come across

He did a remix on the latest Deftones’ remix album. It’s not great.

He was indeed, but those were his only singing roles (I think)…
