They were stunningly arrogant when they first came out. called themselves the best band of the last 15 years, that kind of stuff. Don’t really mind that so much, bit of banter innit, playing up to NME or whatever.
But then Sam’s Town was a blatant, po-faced attempt at being some kind of ‘big statement’ Springsteen-esque opus and they just didn’t have the substance for it to land.
Maybe after that they settled on being ‘just a good pop band’? But by then yours truly had made up his mind.
