Better than Green Day 3/5

My first (or maybe second) crush was a girl called Sarah who used to sit next to me in orchestra. She and a couple of other of my classmates were in a band, whose name I will redact, and through my fancying of her I used to go watch her at various crap pubs. Anyway, I remember them doing a cover of One Way and as a lovestruck 15 year old thinking it was the bees’ knees.

They came to their heyday in the midst of Britpop and during the time of Swampy and Twyford Down, so I think they got a rough deal of it from the music press. Can’t say I’ve listened to them in over 20 years but I’ll give them a 3.

Le Thevethers, as they’re known in France

My wife posts on a forum specific to her profession, and said that last year someone was on asking people to listen to her husband’s band’s album (for some reason she didn’t call it a JAG) and it turned out to be the Levellers, rather than the nobodies you’d have assumed.

In 1995 when I was 13 I lost a bet to a friend at school that Just The One would be Christmas number one, because I heard it a few weeks before Christmas and thought it was the best song ever. The world did not agree on that occasion.

I’m not a huge Levellers fan but worthy of a four I think based on a handful of massive singles, being the entire zeitgeist for five minutes in the early 90s, good politics, general GBOL behaviour and their stubborn refusal to change in the face of decades of mockery from muso snobs who wouldn’t know a good time if it bought them a pint of cider.

I had a brief dalliance of appreciation for them back in the 90’s, when “One Way” was a staple of the indie club, and “This Garden” was a minor hit. Moved away from them, probably due to snobbishness around their image, and haven’t listened to them in years.

So many bands of that era remain in my listening habits, but there’s something about The Levellers that I’ve just never gone back. I dunno, I guess they did become a bit of a joke, whereas others didn’t, and the 2 that I’ve given them probably reflects that, if unfairly.

Just stuck on This Garden to see if I do actually still like it. There are didgeridoos. I’m not sure it’s for me.

Remember them being really really popular in the years above me at school. Were never massively my thing at the time, but went to see them despite knowing about two songs cos a bunch of pals were going and they were fantastic. Managed to create a proper communal vibe at their gigs and while I still was total converted, could absolutely see why people loved them so much.

Got an absolutely torrid time in the music press seemingly on the basis that they looked a bit scruffy and were genuinely invested in alternative lifestyles and promoting environmental issues. Same way people was snotty about crusties and Megadog etc at the time, when both were really pretty great if you ever bothered to find out.

Real force for good and seem like proper GBOLs. Going to listen to their 90s peak albums before voting, but they deserve a high score

I saw them at Glastonbury once because they were playing in a tent and it was raining. I remember nothing about it.

Never heard them but I know they do exist, unlike say The Wrens or Idlewild. ???/5

Really, really got into them around 92/93 but was just a passing fad for me. They remained decent enough up until that album with Dog Train and Oh What a Beautiful Day which was just awful.

Poor man’s Wonder Stuff, but still giving them a 4 to keep teenage me happy.

Didn’t they hold the record for the biggest crowd at Glastonbury until Lionel richie?

Quite possibly - they headlined in 1994 where the alternative was The Pretenders. So captive audience of floppy-haired, long-sleeved t-shirt wearers who probably didn’t want to see Chrissie Hynde.

I thought they still held the record? Didn’t realise Richie had beaten it.

Man, I used to love this band. Particularly Levelling the Land and the s/t album. I think I’m going for a 3, just for those two alone. But I think it’s hard to argue that they haven’t been largely pish since.

Side story: Was out walking my dog the other day, and a family walked past, and their young teenage daughter was wearing exactly the same long sleeved Levellers t-shirt I used to have when I was a teenager. I blurted out “Woah, I haven’t seen that t-shirt in YEARS! That was my favourite t-shirt when I was a kid!”. The mum laughed, but the girl looked mortified.
