Grew up listening to The Roots.

Deep and consistent back catalogue, super tight live.

For pure nostalgia I went with the obvious Things Fall Apart and You Got Me, but could have been so many others.

The fucking best. 5/5

Something for everyone in their discography if you look hard enough.

Questlove is the coolest mother fucker on the planet and Black Thought is the best raw talent on the mic of all time.

Looking forward to this. A real blind spot for me so gonna be checking a fair bit out today. Abstain obvs.

One of my biggest musical regrets is never having seen them live.

It’s a 5 from me. Things Fall Apart, Game Theory and Phrenology are fucking brilliant, and like Ant said, they cover nearly all bases across their back catalogue. Very good band imo.

They still do semi-regular Jazz Cafe shows every now and then. Went to one in 2016 (I think?) and it was fucking incredible. I’ll see you in the next one!

Great band. Only caught them live once, at Glastonbury 2003 and it was a lovely show. Actually had tickets for their Brixton Academy show in 2015, but then my son was selfishly born on that day so I couldn’t make it - still haven’t forgiven him for that. Gone for Phrenology as best album as that made up the bulk of their set when I saw them so it’s the one I most connect with. 5/5 :+1:

Not a big fan. Questlove seems like an all time top dog though.

An obvious 5. Will write more about them later.

Questlove just ripping it and Black Thought at the top of his game:

ORGAN!:

Essentially a Hip-Hop Saturday night TV variety show impressionist set:

You lot probably want a concept album based on a character from a Sufjan Stevens song as well, right? Well, here ya go!:

Groovy as fuck followed by 7 minutes of free jazz? OK!:

Smooth as fuck:

And go on then, you can have a little Joanna Newsom, as a treat:

The GOAT:

The show that finally made me vow never to go to Brixton Academy again. The sound was so fucking awful. You didn’t miss anything, forgive your son.

Still so good.

Yeah, they never came to Newcastle when I lived there, and for some reason the London dates have never worked out for me.

I’d have loved to have seen them when Malik B was still alive and in the group.

It’s fucking unbelievable.

I have it on a playlist for running and the lift it gives when it comes round on a long one is crazy. I reckon I can probably credit my only sub-2hr half-marathon to him tbh

He doesn’t breathe for 10 minutes. Quite remarkable.

Big time.

That period where they lived in London and played regularly must have been amazing.
