šŸŽµ How Good Are They Really šŸŽµ The Shins

Fairly inoffensive band given the kiss of death by Zack ā€˜I punched a child’ Braff

Yeah it did cross my mind that the Blue Nile sort of get a pass for that - including from me who gave them a 5. Who knows how these things work

Lol I was at that too doing similar

I like that the fields at both Reading and Leeds were littered with super relaxed DiSers/future DiSers completely unaware of each other

They had their moment back in the day. Then I saw them live - Easily the most boring major band I’ve ever seen perform. A 3 would be too high, so a 2.

That Columbus date is on my radar… and I don’t have to work the day after. Neat.

Fun fact. At Reading 2007 stranger found me in a horrible state and took photo of me whilst i was coverdd in glitter and stank of vodka. They had no idea eho i was and i hadno idea who they were. They then qent in recognise me in these forums and thst user was @El_Merto and they proved it with a photo

They helped me get back to my friends

I wonder if they were laying down during the shins

Same for me, I stand by Wincing the Night Away being just as good as the first two. I have all 3 rated 4.5 out of 5 and really I’m having a hard time picking one for the poll.

Huge fan of The Shins in the early 2000s and really was impressed with Wincing being as good 4 years after Chutes. I’ve played the first 2 so much at this point, and haven’t played any Shins in some time by now, but will always consider those 3 albums indie pop classics. 4/5

Port of Morrow was a huge disappointment, so cringe. Heartworms was even worse, and I never listened to the last one.

It’d be nice to meet you properly some day!

Oh, Inverted - Great
Chutes - Great
Wincing - Great
Port - Better than I remember it being.
Heartworms - Snooze fest
The Worm’s Heart - Reworked Snooze fest. Still very snoozy.

High3/low4 out of 5

It’s hard to quantify just how disappointed I was with that album

The 5 year break, Simple Song being quite good and then that album just being a whole heap of nothing barely a hook in the whole thing

Actually thought Heartworms was pretty good after being mega disappointed by Port of Morrow. Possible I was still just being positive from their EOTR headline set, and I can’t say I’ve listened to it recently to say if this is accurate.

Also, while I’ve never lay down in a field watching The Shins at a festival, I have done so for Broken Bells!

Doesn’t count

Aren’t the Shins just Mercer anyway now? So technically I literally have!

One of those bands who I will listen to solidly for a week and think they are one of the best bands ever, and then not listen to them again for 3 years

The only guy who can hold a candle to
Neil Finn in the art of marrying a melody to a lyric. Proper boring statement but a genuine craftsman and I am here for it.

Phantom Limb might be the best single since the turn of the millennium. Last album was almost all shite (apart from the lovely Mildenhall) and Chutes is way overrated, Wincing and Port of Morrow are where it’s at. He should do a whole album with Janet Weiss.

Had a whole host of great summers listening to them. The day I bought Wincing and Sound of Silver was a very good one. Saw them once, they were probably the worst live act I’ve ever seen? Awful.

Feel like he might be a bit of a knob? Didn’t he shed the other band members fairly badly?

Stingy 4.

At school the bad boys you to play this game called shinsies or something where you had to hold each other by the shoulders and kick each other in the shins until somebody gave up. Horrible game!

Remembering watching them getting their van stuck in the sand at a Camber Sands ATP and feeling sorry for them as they had to dig the Van out by hand…….
