Bit of proper ska if anyone fancies it

Occupy a similar sort of ground to The Jam for me. Growing up in the 80s you would hear (and enjoy) the big singles a lot. That would extend to indie nights in provincial Scotch nightclubs.

Never felt the desire to check them out further even though I do like that ska beat! The occasional hit of hi-hat on the radio was enough.

Listened to the first album this afternoon and was a bit surprised at this. A few lines that would probably have passed for humour at the time but which stick out against the progressive idea of the band.

Think it’s a 3/5 for me.

Stupid Marriage and Little Bitch on the first album are particularly unpleasant, and Too Much Too Young has a bit of the same thing to it, and Blank Expression. It’s a sort of sneering contempt for women which I find difficult to listen to.

Stupid Marriage was the one that jumped out at me. Along with a couple of lines in Nite Klub.

Do The Dog’s a great drum intro as well.

Here you go. Ended up being more ska/reggae than 2tone but give it a whirl

Sorry if I’ve put it in your head and ruined it for you.

The Specials were/are very enjoyable and I rated them a 5, because of that.

This thread, however has inspired me to dig out some old Trojan mix tapes, which as well as being in Bristol, were a big part of my early getting into the reggae genres. I think they probably release different versions of the same misses every so often, but at the time, they were doing some great 3 CD mixes of root, dub, ska, dancehall, etc. Dub has always been my favourite, but listening back to a ska mix will ALWAYS make the sun shine. always.

Gave them a 4, maybe a bit generous but for nostalgic reasons, played In the Studio to death back in the day and loved Stan Campbell’s solo album.

Abstaining this time, but I remember hearing ghost town for the first time on Zayn Lowe’s radio 1 show and having my mind blown. It’s a serious achievement, absolutely wild what they pulled off with it in terms of the arrangement and the production imo.

Didn’t one of those dudes go on to be in fun boy three? Truly one of the worst bands of all times

Have stuck a best of playlist on and a lot of this is top shelf material

Saw them when they reformed with everyone except Jerry and was amazed at the energy they still had. Although I think most of them have now left…

LOL not as good as destiny’s child says DiS

This jimmy cliff version is much better than the Walkman one
