Remember when Mel C released ‘Goin Down’ and she had her short spiky hair, played Reading, did a cover of ‘Anarchy in the UK’ and changed the lyrics to ‘I am an anarchist/I am a sporty spice’…strange times!

Whenever I hear a Spice Girls song these days I’m always surprised by how bad everything sounds. I’m not talking about the songwriting but more the production, sound-design, mixing etc. It all sounds so cheap and half-arsed.

I don’t know whether that’s because it was always that way or whether it’s that the standard of pop production has been seriously improved since the Spice Girls heyday and it sounds worse now.

I think the production on a lot of 90s chart pop hasn’t stood the test of time at all.

I think The Spice Girls sound particularly bad. Compare Say You’ll Be There with - say - Deep by East 17 (which sounds like it could be PM Dawn or something), or Never Forget by Take That (which just sounds like a show tune). Even 2 Become 1 sounds half-arsed

It always sounded cheap. The music was entirely secondary to the marketing gimmick. A blueprint that was followed for a whole decade of TV talent shows thereafter - I firmly believe that there is a direct line from the Spice Girls through to a dog doing somersaults on Britain’s Got Talent being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (give it 4 years).

I think you’re absolutely right in this, but I do think the Spice Girls production is uniquely dreadful. I mean, there’s only 2 years between Wannabe and Sugababes’ Overload, and the latter sounds so much better it’s crazy.

Sound of the Underground was released only six years later than Wannabe but if you listen to them back to back they sound like they were written and recorded 50 years apart and on entirely different planets.
