Jesus, not even an original way of padding it out!

There’s a fair argument to say they paved the way for a lot of it, and then through the Gallagher etc reverence to the Roses that the lads latched on whole sale over the years.

They made a great album and a handful of great singles but they’ve been weirdly over-rated over the years. About ten years ago there was a rash of critical lists absurdly claiming their debut was one of the greatest or even the greatest records ever, which is plainly absurd. It’s good but not that good. Its critical reputation seems to have settled down a bit now.

What they had over other indie guitar bands of their era was the quality of their musicianship- few bands of their type had three top quality musicians. On the other hand Ian Brown is an awful singer and a so-so songwriter. Most of the songs are either nonsense or just cocky Manc street boasts. He got away with it for a while out of sheer chutzpah but that was never going to last. By the time of the second album the joins were showing - a couple of good songs but mostly a whole lot of nothing stitched together with guitar solos.

I’m not sure if the long wait for that second album Harme or sustained their reputation. Had they released an album that mediocre straight after the first one the gloss would surely have come off the debut more quickly. On the other hand, if they’d made another album quickly that drew on the interesting direction they seemed to be going in in Fools Gold it might have been a classic.

Vacillated between a 3 and a 4 but in the end I just about went for a 4 because the good stuff is very good.

Tbf playing it backwards it’s the only way they could make Ian sound decent.

ah here though. it might be a simple move but if some Wire-friendly-band did that we’d be praising it.

would you say it’s because of the stone roses that so many people ended up wearing bucket hats?!

That was literally just Elephant Stone backwards though. Don’t Stop has forwards vocals on it where the lyrics are the closest words to what the backwards vocals sound like. I quite like that. They did this with Made Of Stone for a b-side as well which I think is the best example of this trick

I hate Brown but I disagree with this, if it was in fact him who was writing the lyrics. I mentioned upthread that Adored has been largely misinterpreted (ironically by people who probably consider themselves intellectually above the Roses, but also by fans as well tbf), but that’s not the only example, there’s some interesting religious imagery and some nice phrases going on in those early lyrics.

The Mondays were one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen, the Roses one of the worst.

This is probably true, to be fair. I think he ran out quite quickly though.
