If there’s one thing in music I can’t fucking stand it’s that bullshit. Even those Neu! tracks I alluded to above are the worst example of musicians being extremely lazy and attempting to pad out a run time. Neu! produced some of my favourite music of all time but their second album is barely an EP thanks to silly backwards tracks.

That wasn’t an artistic decision as such, more that they had run out of money and couldn’t finish the album. I mean, they could have waited a bit and saved up some of their birthday money instead I suppose but hey.

Bit different to calling them ‘intellectual minnows’ though. But being the obvious intellectual titan that you are, you’d already know that

I know that. It’s still lazy.

I’m sick to death of various music websites and books presenting it as an artistic coup by Neu! I’ve seen it in so many places over the years. They chanced their arm, the tracks sound like shit, end of.

I get that their debut isn’t the best album of all-time yet it did stand out a lot back in '89. Thinking of comparisons it’s a little like if The Beatles had dropped Revolver as their first album, people would sit up and take notice, and they did.

When Fool’s Gold followed you really did wonder, momentarily, if we had that generations Beatles on our hands, which time tells us we didn’t, but in those moments, they seemed steeped in glory and wore it well. Such a confident debut album and as you point out correctly the musicianship was top drawer.

don’t work yourself into a shoot lads

what sort of qualifications do you need to listen to this band though? At least one pint at a working class pub? or is that too much

Also:

  • It’s not a ‘defence’ it’s a criticism; and
  • Clearly not a competition, but I willing to bet a lot that my upbringing was every bit as working class as yours

You came and you gave without taking

I would argue it goes back further than that. (I actually agree with those sentiments but that’s beside the point). At the end of the century Channel 4 did a 100 best ever album run down of the 20th century and it polled 2nd, splitting Revolver at number 3 and Sgt Pepper at number 1, and Bob Geldof, who was on the panel debating the list, absolutely threw a shit fit that they split the Beatles’ vote. For that alone I feel they deserve serious props. It’s worth digging out. His reaction was priceless.
