Yes it is! It is by far the best book about them. The 1995 Second Coming tour stuff is good as the author does manage to interview Maddix who gives some inside info about the problems they were having at that time.

Ian Brown actually sounds alright there but it’s weird that they didn’t just drench him in reverb like they do in the recordings, he’d sound way better.

have you read the John Robb one? always had the air of a fanboy tome which put me off.

Yeah, i read that one way back in the late 90s. Didn’t enjoy the style of it at all. You are right, it is fanboy stuff from someone who is a close friend of the band.

strong words from a man who can’t help but compare the boards to nazis when his football team loses :’(

I’m reluctantly going to have to give a 5 because of all the softbois voting 1 because someone with an ian brown haircut stole their girlfriend or whatever. you drove me to this.

A very young Tony Way there.

Yup

Standing Here might be their best song, tbh.

I do love their cover art. Some of the best, imo.

Echoing @KillingMoon. Yep, that book is awful. so, so fanboy and dreadfully written too.

The outro is pretty lovely, I really like Where Angels Play too. Their first album and early b-sides and stuff are undeniably great.

I genuinely think second coming is better than the s/t. I don’t think second coming is good especially but it has a few decent tracks whereas the s/t sounds utterly awful to my ears.

I’ve listened to a couple of the tracks like the 2012 waterfall linked above and, even on my phone speaker, sounds way better than the CD… Maybe it’s the mixing or something? But it sounds really grey and mushy, all the songs together. Urrggghhh.

Reni is a fab drummer but I loathe the baggy beat that crops up in a lot of the S/t tracks. It’s like getting Michalangelo to paint LIVE LAUGH LOVE on the sistene Chapel ceiling.

I’ve met John and really liked him (in fact he stayed over at my house once, as a guest of my sadly deceased former housemate), but I will never understand how he still thought the Roses were great in later years, and reported Ian’s more recent musings relatively uncritically. I did read his Roses book many years ago and seem to recall enjoying it at the time.
