Original Pirate Material is one of the best, most important albums in UK music history. Total 10/10. Second album is fine. Find him to be, on the whole, a bit cringey these days.

4/5 thanks to the debut though.

who’s this cunt?

oh right, the thread is about the street. 5/5 for OPM. 1 or 2 /5 for everything afterwards

a generous 4

Really really loved OPM when it came out, wasn’t quite so keen on A Grand… although it was still decent. Clearly I don’t love them or I would have at least listened to any of the subsequent albums, but I think he’s a good original voice who’s made at least one excellent record. Hmmm. Three seems tight, four too generous…

When I was 15 I thought that song about weed vs drink was very insightful

5 for the pasty referencing username. Had a pasty from Sainsbury’s yesterday - it was fucking terrible. Growing up in Plymouth I didn’t realise how spoiled I was for decent pasties.

2 for the Streets - just never really “got” it. I’m good with spoken word, but usually I’d like the music to be a bit more interesting rather than casio keyboard beats and one bar loops. There was and is so much better hip hop made in the UK that I was always aghast that this was what was held up as being special. Just don’t see it.

computers and blues is a surprisingly good and moving record

thought a grand dont come for free was unbelievable when i was 11, and OPM is obv good but wouldn’t go back to either of them now

Going for a 4 because not many people have made an album as good and cool as OPM.

A grand… Sort of turns his sound into a cartoon, but he does manage to pull off a proper concept album with characters and an emotional arc that isn’t The Wall levels of cringe which is also impressive. Never bothered with any of his other stuff

Grand Don’t Come for Free is great and actually makes the concept album angle work, OPM was some excellent stuff on though I should go back and listen to it as more of an album

Think a 3 is fair but may go for a 4 as it’ll be pretty criminal if he ends up down at the low 2s, far too good for that. Weak Become Heroes and It’s Too Late are genuinely two of the best British tracks in the 2000s

Absolute nails on a chalkboard stuff for me.

Yeah, fell off hard. Had he just released OPM (and its hit single, Heaven is a Half Pipe) and disappeared he’d still be hailed as a genius. But that was really all anyone needed from the project/it was diminishing returns from there on out. Fair play in some ways for turning that into chart pop smashes on the second album, but it was incredibly overrated on release and only a couple of tracks hold up from it. Everything else it is unbearably naff.

5/5 for OPM, 3/5 overall.

Leave it ahhhhht
