Hmmmm. Do you know that somehow I’ve never listened to the earlier stuff that’s supposed to be good? Might give A Northern Soul a whirl this morning to check it out. Always been put off by the excerpt from the heavy handed satire thread on the back cover but I am willing to take the hit for HGATR

Tedious old shit. 1.

i still love the first EP and those first two albums, plus Nick McCabe is an absolute genius

Verve - 4.5/5

The Verve - 2.5/5

Reformation Verve - 0.5/5.

The reformation gig I saw is one of the worst gigs I’ve ever been to. Utter, utter shite. McCabe seems a sound lad though.

Painfully shit. Career saved by one song that’s so good I can’t in all fairness give them the 1 they actually deserve. I remember picking up The Drugs Don’t Work unheard in some sort of golden post-Bitter Sweet Symphony afterglow thinking to myself “Good god, are the Verve good now?!”. No, dear reader. No they were not.

3/5 from me. ASIH and Northern Soul are both really good records and History is one of the best 90s singles. Despite being 13 and heavily into Britpop when it came out, I never really clicked with Urban Hymns and I’ve always found Bitter Sweet Symphony and Drugs Don’t Work really dull. It has it’s moments, like this

but I’ve never really got why it was so revered. Have absolutely no interest in hearing Forth, the single off if was terrible so I never bothered.

That album Nick McCabe and (I think) Simon Tong put out as The Shining was quite good.

They’ll get pasted on here, but they were a really, really good band (until 1999). I’ll often listen to the Haigh Hall gig on the bonus Urban Hymns edition. It’s brilliant, they just made a brilliant noise.

Ashcroft solo subthread would be interesting - think he’d slip nicely into bottom place in the rankings (and I would have absolutely no problem with that).

The gravity grave EP and a storm in heaven are so good then they just fall of a cliff.
Will have to think about this.

Remember The United Nations Of Sound? No, nor does anyone else.

I feel like they deserve a higher score than they’re likely to get. The early stuff is exceptional shoegaze / borderline post-rock at times and, even in the later stuff, there are some great ideas amongst the overplayed Absolute Radio tracks (and those are good songs as well, removed from the context of their own ubiquity).

The only band you can conceivably describe as the missing link between Zelienople and the Courteeners, which I find funny.

Here are some belters

Forth somewhat frustratingly iirc actually harkens back to the early more experimental stuff quite often, but is also streamrollered a bit by Ashcroft trying to turn them into his solo project again
