the thing is, even though I absolutley despise Queen’s music, I can’t even criticise them as people ffs. Like Freddie was the first gay rock icon other than Rob Halford and has a strong voice even if its not to my taste, Brian May’s vegan and an animal rights activist AND an astronomer (although he is a Tory, lol), is there any actual dirt on Queen?

I hate to go in two footed around here but sometimes, DiS, you can be a right bunch of silly sausages.

By the way, this might get a bit wasted here but I missed the Queen thread so settle an argument. I posited to my partner and a friend last night that Bohemian Rhapsody is Queen’s only good song because its so fucking ridiculous and theatrical, both of whom laughed at me as if I’d insulted the legit greatest song of all time, so:

Bohemian Rhapsody:

  • Legit one of the greatest song of all time
  • it’s quite funny or something
  • irredeemably shit

enjoying this is your version of two-footed, Steve McLaren

None of the above. I used to enjoy it, been ruined by the adoration and references surrounding it

Played Sun City during apartheid, refused to acknowledge why that might be bad.

Yeah that’s the one. Quite liked it though I wouldn’t said it was good, quite funny to watch not realising what it is though

NEVERMIND just found out he’s Parsi-Indian*

I reckon Freddie would have gone for it’s quite funny. They did a lot of songs that were silly and bombastic. Seems really fine to like them for that imo.

yeah I’d be ok if people like them in a tongue in cheek way, as I do with that song (and only that song, largely thanks to Wayne’s World) BUT PEOPLE ACTUALLY RATE THEM AS LIKE ONE OF THE BEST BANDS EVER

Yeah I’m not a fan but i get why people like to sing along to them. I reckon Freddie’s clear annunciation explains a lot of their popularity.

I’m quite partial to some silly overblown music at times just of a different type and I’d never get offended if people thought it was silly and bombastic.

he’s got a voice, for sure

Did a fair bit of standard 70s rock star shit didn’t they as well? Seem to get a pass on it though so maybe they didn’t do anything like Led Zep?

basically comes back to “all your old faves are problematic”

Weird innit. Binned off all my Ryan Adams records soon as that story broke, still and got and listen to Led Zep. I guess somehow the ‘distance’ means I separate the art from the artist, though it’s not really a conscious decision.

Kind of all three really. Whatever you want to say about them Freddie was clearly very aware of their own ridiculousness, and was happy to celebrate it and send it up at the same time

Always wanted to do the dot-to-dot on the front of By Numbers. Might print a copy one day and do it.
