I tried to listen to them once but it wasn’t for me

They’ll probably get a lot of shit on here today, and admittedly I haven’t listened to them in years, but they were quite important for me personally in widening my listening tastes a lot during a time when nu metal was massive. For that reason I’m quite fond of them. It also helps that I never really encountered the stereotypical Tool fan and had to listen to them chatting shite.

Gonna relisten today but leaning towards a 3

That was the lyrics not the time signature and he’s apologized for that saying that he’d crawled up his arse too far with that. :smiley:

It’s going to a long thread. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Fucking hell, I just pulled the FS out of my head for a hyperbolic example of pretension, and they actually did do it? Amazing! I suppose I might have read that somewhere ages ago and it was lurking in the back of my brain but that’s brilliant

Right well, I’ll be THAT guy then. I’ve gone for a 4. They were a massively important band for me back around the end of the 90s, and also basically ended my interest in metal.

I have no interest in all the wank that tiresome Tool fans spout on the internet and I’ve never had to talk to them to put me off them. Nu-metal was obviously starting to get popular and as much as I enjoyed that for a while, someone leant me Aenima and it utterly blew my mind.

There is also a lot of pretentious filler wank, particularly on the last couple of albums (and on Lateralus too), and Maynard is actually a Tool with a capital T.

But that still doesn’t detract from how much they knocked my music taste off-centre. I think they were the beginning of me enjoying music that was more unpredictable and played with my preconceptions of how songs could be structured that I still enjoy today. So yes. I loved them. Maybe not so much anymore, but for a time they were a huge deal for me.

Gonna be some big opinions here.

Got some stonking choons - Stinkfist, Parabola and Schism chief among them. Last two albums were mostly naff.

Probably goes without saying but some incredible drum work;

Gone from finding all the extra stuff around them really cool when I was 16 to finding it cringeworthy as fuck to now just appreciating the effort put into the lyrics, live shows and artwork.

Lateralus was/is still great, haven’t liked much since (apart from The Pot and first Perfect Circle album) and couldn’t really get into the earlier stuff, going with a three

5 / Lateralus / Lateralus

Didn’t realise others held the song Lateralus (aka the fibonacci song) in such high regard.

Not a clue. I’m too old for that whole nu-metal era which, presumably, this lot are part of. I have never felt a pull towards checking these bands out. A total blank spot for me with regards to nu-metal other than Chop Suey and Rollin’. Are any of their songs as good as those?
