Those massive drum kits are like the drum equivalant of a double-neck guitar aren’t they? Good for overblown 70s prog-monsters and 80s metalheads but do they actually add anything musically?

lateralus was huge for me at the time and still like it a great deal. think the three instrumentalists do some good and interesting stuff with a very minimal palette but maynard mostly ruins them for me now, especially the last two albums.

I have honestly had a dream where I was playing a show with a new band and the kit was at the back of the stage and the bass drum was at the front with the pedal on a long chain. Huge delay between pushing the pedal and the drum beat sounding meant I couldn’t work out the timings at all and the rest of the band were furious with me. Haven’t thought about that in years - thanks for reminding me :+1: :grinning:

think i’m protective of tool fans though, they became a stereotype no idea how fair that was, but now their is a certain type of person who thinks it is hilarious to wind up tool fans who are much worse imo (anecdotal evidence about one troll-y guy I used to know)

Sounds like a great dream tbh, you should treasure it

I mean… Yes?

Drum kits are modular musical instruments. More doesn’t necessarily mean better but if you know how to use it all, or are, say, Marco Minnemann, large drum kits bring a huge amount of musicality options.

But yes it’s also mostly prog.

Here’s a video no one will watch:

I think minimal drum kits and massive half circles a both good, reminds me of that Jeffrey Lewis song about liking completely opposite things

Should have stopped after Lateralus

Nah a lot of Tool fans really are the worst. I’ve even encountered some here in Northants and we don’t even have music!

I know two hardcore tool fans, and I do think they like tool a bit too much, but I can’t really talk

Counterpoint though, pitch shifted stuff like Aphex Twin is effectively an infinitely massive drum kit

“I enjoy Tool as much as anybody who never listens to them does. At the end of the day, they’re a bunch of hippies who dress like the cast of the matrix and for that I applaud you, you have the balls to enjoy that kind of lacklustre music and I don’t.”

Nah that’s not fair, whilst they share some qualities Aphex twin has a lot more musicality and inventiveness
