Please don’t do a Ween HGATR. Don’t think I could stomach it. (I love them)

A NIN hgatr would be good i reckon

Sure but NIN have a lot more of a popular edge to them so what I mean is I think you would find more to like. Tool weren’t involved in the Watchmen TV series soundtrack but Reznor was

(I do generally like Reznor’s scores tbf)

have listened to a fair few tracks now, absolutely not for me this kinda stuff. i’m going to abstain though as don’t think i can rate them having heard a handful of tracks even if i think those tracks were pish.

But that’s not the whole thread. That’s just my undying hatred of pulp. :stuck_out_tongue:
Who are terrible.

Yea, no.
You can call it self indulgent all you want but the man is a great drummer.

Same here, saw them twice on this tour and they were dull. Saw them on 10,000 days and they were amazing but I had taken a few too many mushrooms. It was a little intense

Right, I’ve calmed down enough to actually write this up. I feel that I may have thrown my toys out of the pram a bit yesterday, but watching all the people who would make this an interesting thread come in vote and say they were muting the thread while the pile up kept going was pretty hard to watch, especially on a band that are as good as Tool was.
I said was, because of the last 2 albums but I’ll get to that in a bit.
(I’ve written this without reading the thread so I might repeat other posters)

I first heard of Tool back in the early 90’s when Raw Power on ITV showed the video for Sober and it blew my mind. Everything about it was so dark and intense and that was only half the song because the wankers only showed half the video!
It was everything I was looking for in music at the time and the really creepy stop motion animation in the video really made the song stand out from the grunge also rans.

But as much as I loved the singles, the album didn’t really click with me.
In 96 they released Ɔnima and they found their sound and I just fell in love with it. I love bass lead alternative music and here the rhythm section is driving the songs. The guitar is adding more atmosphere that most acts can manage. In fact it is pretty amazing that they are only a 3 piece, it’s such a massive sound. Maynard gets a lot of shit but he has (had) an incredible voice and I would rather listen to him than your typical rock singer.
The song Ɔnima is a fantastic song about how much Maynard hates L.A. and it’s a lot of fun hearing him singing gleefully that the people of L.A should learn to swim before the next earthquake.

The highlight of the album for me is the 13 minute closer Third Eye. One of the few songs that actually deserves it’s run time with lyrics that I’ve always loved. Maynards delivery if ā€œSo good to see you once again, I thought that you were hiding
And you thought that I had run away, Chasing the tail of dogmaā€

Fuck. This is running far too long.

So I didn’t like Lateralus when it came out. It just felt more of the same but with more self indulgence. Tool had become TOOL.
To me the prog side of the band had lost the run of itself. Saying that, in 2001 I was out clubbing all the time and wasn’t in the place for moody metal.
Turns out I was wrong. Even though it’s too long, the highs are amazing with Lateralus being the jewel in the albums crown. Yes, the syllables of the lyrics are based on the Fibonacci sequence. Yes it’s ridiculous, but the song has some of my favourite lyrics ever.

ā€œWith my feet upon the ground I lose myself
Between the sounds and open wide to suck it in
I feel it move across my skin
I’m reaching up and reaching out
I’m reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me
What ever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one’s been
We’ll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one’s beenā€

But I don’t know, maybe people would prefer another love song?

Fuck. Ok wrap it up UR.

10,000 days isn’t great, it has few great songs but the lyrics to The Pot are pure cringe. Fear Inoculum would be amazing if every song on it was 5 minutes shorter. (At least!)

But yea. Tool are weird, they shouldn’t be anywhere as big as they are. The world needs more bands doing something different and being weird.

Did I say 5 because I fucking mean 5.

I need a lie down now.

Oh, saw them at Download ā€˜18 and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like it. It was just stunning and one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The crowd were just kind of stunned when they finished and then went nuts.

It’s a grumpy well off white men fantasising specifically about drug addicts and actresses being drowned. Fucking awful.

Is it? Doesn’t seem anything like that specific unless you’re taking the line ā€˜fret for your Prozac’ as having a crack at ā€˜drug addicts’?

The line is ā€œfuck all you junkies and fuck your short memoriesā€. It seemed kind pointed to be honest.

Ugh. Did not read down that far. Yeah, absolutely fuck that. Awful. Looks like I might be swinging back the other way wrt Tool then :frowning: Apologies @ricardomotorbike

they’re very parody-able these days but must be mentioned how perfect the videos were for this band, weird, creepy, abstract but so engaging and enchanting. Remember MTV2 used to always play them late at night and they were just fascinating and quite an excellent way to subconsciously get into the musc

Their videos were made by the guitarist, who was a special effects, make-up, and set design guy.

From wiki:

After graduation, he went to work at Rick Lazzarini’s Character Shop. During the next couple of years, he worked the TV show Monsters . He designed and fabricated a Grim Reaper makeup and a zombie head on a spike (later used in Ghostbusters II ) among others. After that, he went to Stan Winston’s special effects workshop, where he worked on Predator 2 , sculpting a unique-looking skull for the Predator’s spaceship interior.[4]

Jones worked on several other films in Hollywood doing makeup and set design, including Jurassic Park , Terminator 2: Judgment Day , Dances with Wolves , and Ghostbusters II . He did the ā€œFreddy Krueger in the wombā€ makeup for A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child , as well as work for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master .

maybe this explains why he didn’t have time to write another riff!

Giving Aenima another go and just pinpointed the exact moment I lose interest (again) as ā€˜Hooker With a Penis’

That hooker with a penis is Maynard btw. The song is about people accusing the band of selling out.
But yea, it can be a bit much.
