To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Tool. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the songs will go over a typical listener’s head. There’s also Maynard’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realize that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Tool truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Maynard’s existencial catchphrase “fuck all you junkies and fuck your short memories” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Tools’s genius unfolds itself on their stereos. What fools… how I pity them. :joy: And yes by the way, I DO have a Tool tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

When I was at university, my friend said to me about her ex boyfriend (also a friend), “Alex has a pretty big Tool thing.”

I assumed she was talking about his musical tastes because he did dig Tool, but I guess she might not have been.

That people still use ‘IQ’ is pretty hilarious, isn’t it.

It’s a Rick and Morty meme

Oh right, thought it was just a pastiche of the DiS stereotypical Tool fan. Less fun now.

should I check out his non-SYL stuff then?

I just read that he decided to end that band after this very set. I feel mad privileged to have witnessed this set in the flesh.

Oh man hell yeah. I’ve been meaning to start a thread. You’d love him.

GF is a big fan of his, I’ve enjoyed what she’s played. Ziltoid the Omniscient gets a lot of spins in this house, it’s pretty good.

It’s a pIsstake of RnM fanboys more specifically

Unlike with the mega Placebo post I wrote, Tool aren’t in my “this is my truth, so fuck you all” wheelhouse, so I definitely fall into this category.

Gave them a 4. At their best, a hyper dynamic, powerhouse of a band that for all their brazen shithousery can occasionally do some genuinely poignant material that also sounds near perfect.

In less expected Tool, Danny Carey’s also on this Daniel Romano podcast/single from last year.

On the money on Wings Pt 2. Very poignant as you say. One of the best

Yeah @Acorn - Juular is an absolutely massive tune to get you started with.

Wings Pt II is probably the only song I’d regularly listen to on 10,000 Days. Have little time for the rest.

Greg Saunier is one of my very faves

I reckon the production and pop sensibilities of NIN’s best stuff might appeal to you

Have a memory of some Tool fans on usenet turning on Maynard for Wings of Marie Pt II because of the distortion at the end - it was something that “lesser / more immature” bands would do and that Maynard should have outgrown that. The Holy Gift created a monster.

Whenever I’ve read tool fans writing stuff on the internet, I’ve got the impression that they’re generally pretty young, and take Tool seriously, in that way you can do when you’re like 16

They wish they had that excuse
