I remember when I first got into metal and alt rock and all that Kerrang non-jazz they were an incredibly mysterious bunch, not doing any press photos and very rarely being interviewed. It would probably have been better if they’d stuck to that tbh.

Huge band for me as a teenager. Still have a handful of tracks I really love. Maynard is, at best, a really creepy dude. I’ll give them a 4 and flounce out of the thread to avoid all the gleeful kickings they’ll get.

I’ve tried with them, I’ve really tried! But I just don’t get it. Some decent hooks in there but too much meandering and some of the lyrics are just cringe.

I do really like a perfect circle though, even their new one which got slaughtered on here.

So, in summary:

I loved the song Sober off that first album, but the rest of it failed to hit the same level, and I gave up.

Fast forward a few years - I was at a party in Nottingham in 2001, and some maniac put Lateralus on, in full. We’d had a few ‘special cigarettes’ and it made so much sense at the time.

Even in the cold light of day I think it holds up as a decent album, but the rest of their stuff doesn’t do much for me.
