This is pretty standard for DiS, the metal snobbery is about the only place you donāt get pulled up for being a dick.
Imagine someone wading into the Tupac or Biggie threads making a joke about gun violence. The forum would come crashing down on them. But here we can have comments about this being music for people who murder children and itās all for the lutz.
Iāve taken shit for being a metal fan since I was 14, Iām pretty sick of it by 45. 
Iāve got a particular interest here because 5 years ago Iād have given them a ā1ā and then ignored the thread. Theyāre a band it took me a full 15-20 years of infrequent attempts to āgetā. Once it connected, it really connected.
How much of the 5 Iām giving them is based on how much I actually like them and how much of it is based on how, objectively, good they are as a band is a separate debate. I rarely sit and listen to an album all the way through but theyāre also not a band where you can just āplay the hitsā.
I think Lateralus is one of the best produced, mixed, and mastered rock albums of the 21st century. It could come out today and still sound better than a lot of the shite thatās come in the twenty(!!) years since its release.
It also takes a special band to write one of āthoseā riffs where regardless of whether you like or even know the band/song, you recognise it, yet anyone who was in a local band at anytime between 2001 and 2010 knows that āSchismā is Sweet Child OāMine for bassists.
Theyāll get a kicking here and, yes, thereās a LOT thatās silly about them. From their uniquely and consistently terrible album art to the hundred-pound shitty-video-screen CD version of Fear Incoculum; but I do think that Tool fans are what people are annoyed by, more than Tool themselves.
But Iād posit that they are no more or less silly than any number of the V SRS BANDS who are held in godlike esteem by these boards, and if given the choice I would infinitely prefer to be stuck in a room with the back catalogue of Tool on a loop than some sad boi guitar nerds like The National or whatever

Well, I am one of the people here who loves metal, so I donāt buy the snobbery angle Iām afraid. And tbh I donāt think metal gets it that bad on this forum either. If I was a regular Radio 6 kind of listener, Iād have tuned out after the 537th time Iād seen someone post a dig about āproper music, proper haircutsā.

Love Lateralus. Iām an absolute sucker for silly time signatures and theyāve got the riffs to match.

Everything about them apart from the dums is boring as hell. Itās the same drop d riff around the first five frets in every song. Whatās the point of having long songs if youāre not going to do anything with them? Mr wine gums is a big creep from the sounds of things too.
In fact even the drums feel kinda culturally insensitive to me like trying to do this whole tribal shaman thing, itās a bit off in that respect too.
a drum kit thatās so big it becomes a semi circle is always a big red flag for me that i will absolutely not like any music that comes from it
How the hell is this thread so incredibly toxic? I get that Tool are a somewhat unique band and that the loveand hate they inspire is proportionally unique but some of the shit here is really quite incredible.

I did see a TV programme about wine where they visited Maynard James Keenanās vineyard. The wine he makes looked great tbf.
musically i have no real opinion on them other than that theyāre very much not for me, but i have to admit yer man Maynard seems like a bit of a wrong un to me as well
I know why youād think that, and honestly I canāt 100% say heās not - he seems to sit in that Joe Rogan sphere where you canāt put your finger on a single, specific, truly terrible thing heās done but if/when he did, youād not be surprised.
