šŸŽµ How Good Are They Really šŸŽµ Tool

This is pretty standard for DiS, the metal snobbery is about the only place you don’t get pulled up for being a dick.
Imagine someone wading into the Tupac or Biggie threads making a joke about gun violence. The forum would come crashing down on them. But here we can have comments about this being music for people who murder children and it’s all for the lutz.

I’ve taken shit for being a metal fan since I was 14, I’m pretty sick of it by 45.

I’ve got a particular interest here because 5 years ago I’d have given them a ā€˜1’ and then ignored the thread. They’re a band it took me a full 15-20 years of infrequent attempts to ā€œgetā€. Once it connected, it really connected.

How much of the 5 I’m giving them is based on how much I actually like them and how much of it is based on how, objectively, good they are as a band is a separate debate. I rarely sit and listen to an album all the way through but they’re also not a band where you can just ā€˜play the hits’.

I think Lateralus is one of the best produced, mixed, and mastered rock albums of the 21st century. It could come out today and still sound better than a lot of the shite that’s come in the twenty(!!) years since its release.

It also takes a special band to write one of ā€˜those’ riffs where regardless of whether you like or even know the band/song, you recognise it, yet anyone who was in a local band at anytime between 2001 and 2010 knows that ā€˜Schism’ is Sweet Child O’Mine for bassists.

They’ll get a kicking here and, yes, there’s a LOT that’s silly about them. From their uniquely and consistently terrible album art to the hundred-pound shitty-video-screen CD version of Fear Incoculum; but I do think that Tool fans are what people are annoyed by, more than Tool themselves.

But I’d posit that they are no more or less silly than any number of the V SRS BANDS who are held in godlike esteem by these boards, and if given the choice I would infinitely prefer to be stuck in a room with the back catalogue of Tool on a loop than some sad boi guitar nerds like The National or whatever

It’s a flippant piece of hyperbole to express my dislike of a terrible band. Sorry if you interpreted it differently

Doubling down definitely the way to go here mate :+1:

Well, I am one of the people here who loves metal, so I don’t buy the snobbery angle I’m afraid. And tbh I don’t think metal gets it that bad on this forum either. If I was a regular Radio 6 kind of listener, I’d have tuned out after the 537th time I’d seen someone post a dig about ā€œproper music, proper haircutsā€.

I’ve asked for that to be deleted, you’re right it was in poor taste but

I absolutely never said that.

Fair enough. It’s early, Monday and I’m annoyed.

Love Lateralus. I’m an absolute sucker for silly time signatures and they’ve got the riffs to match.

Not clicked with anything else really so they get a 3 overall.

It wasn’t meant to be read sarcastically! Just an explanation of my intention and an apology

Presuming everyone muting the thread because they know the band’s just a stream of cascading custard creams deserving of a good dunking

All I’ve ever heard about Tool from people is the line, ā€œI like Tool… but I don’t listen to themā€. Kind of begs the question who does?

Ah the wrestling defence

Everything about them apart from the dums is boring as hell. It’s the same drop d riff around the first five frets in every song. What’s the point of having long songs if you’re not going to do anything with them? Mr wine gums is a big creep from the sounds of things too.

In fact even the drums feel kinda culturally insensitive to me like trying to do this whole tribal shaman thing, it’s a bit off in that respect too.

a drum kit that’s so big it becomes a semi circle is always a big red flag for me that i will absolutely not like any music that comes from it

How the hell is this thread so incredibly toxic? I get that Tool are a somewhat unique band and that the loveand hate they inspire is proportionally unique but some of the shit here is really quite incredible.

Scroobius Pip voice Tool? Just a band.

I did see a TV programme about wine where they visited Maynard James Keenan’s vineyard. The wine he makes looked great tbf.

I know why you’d think that, and honestly I can’t 100% say he’s not - he seems to sit in that Joe Rogan sphere where you can’t put your finger on a single, specific, truly terrible thing he’s done but if/when he did, you’d not be surprised.

Terrible jokes about putting bacon in wine to piss off vegans aside.

I once had somebody describe to me how awesome he is because he apparently came on stage in a pair of Speedos or something and ā€œjust screamed into the mic for ages!!!ā€.

Nah…
