Of course Bono is a pompous twat, but is it better that someone with influence tries to do something good and derails rather than just sitting there counting cash (which he probably does too) like plenty of other huge bands? Completely understand why he splits opinion, as he is a hypocrite. I just don’t bother listening to him pontificating.

Any members in a band that was clearly the biggest in the world for quite some time are going to have huge egos. I can understand under 30s hating them as they’ve probably only seen the twat side, but they had some great tunes, a couple of great albums and were a decent live band before his voice went (see: that awful rainy Glastonbury set when he barely hit a note. Fucking awful)

Achtung Baby was quite an about turn for them when it came out. Still think it stands up really well.
The Joshua Tree was also very good, once I got over the bad press and pomposity in interviews around that time, and just listened to the music.

I’ve gone with a 4.

A terrible and tasteless analogy, come on now

Lol mind this cover

A “hot take” is one that challenges and goes against the general consensus. The general consensus ITT is that u2 are shit, rating them a 4 is a hot take.

Well this has certainly become the most fucking tasteless thread in recent memory.
Abhorrent language altogether.

What’s the most interesting and different U2 song to their stadium rock canon?

Willing to give it a bash with an open mind

‘Numb’, maybe?

Yeah, or Lemon. Although as someone pointed out further up thread Bono’s falsetto in that is pretty annoying

Can’t muster an emotion beyond meh about them

Better than Elliot Smith, who also got a 2/5, but I’d rank U2 higher by a decimal placing

Can tell they were trying for something different here but really doesn’t sound like their heart was in it to me, sounds like the backing track to a prince b side with a guy mumbling over the top

I really like this but on the whole I’m a U2 sceptic so I’m not trying to convert anyone. There’s a smattering of decent tracks from this era of U2 though I reckon.

Had ‘Achtung Baby’ on this morning, was previously warmly disposed to this record but I don’t think it’s aged well. Sounds like they’re trying too hard to be edgy and it’s dated more than the records it was influenced by. The opening track sounds oddly like LCD Soundsystem in places though.

3/5

Think those kind of 90s breakbeat drums will always sound dated now no matter the intention

Anyone done the One/5 bit?

It’s a 3 from me.

love this one too - some sort of ambient-country-gospel fusion

Bono and his friends were part of a surrealist street gang called “Lypton Village”. Bono met one of his closest friends, Guggi, in Lypton Village. The gang had a ritual of nickname-giving. Bono had several names: first, he was “Steinhegvanhuysenolegbangbangbang”, then just “Huyseman”, followed by “Houseman”, “Bon Murray”, “Bono Vox of O’Connell Street”, and finally just “Bono”.

Thought this was someone messing with Bono’s Wikipedia page but appears to be true

Think bono should do this voice more often even if it is just a Jonny cash impression

This has a nice lo if almost krautrock tinge to it, much better than the rest I’ve heard
