Oh man I fucking love Underworld. 5.

Just another the easiest 5 there is. Will expound later, but for now - 5

Yes, love Underworld!!

Two solid 10s in Dubnobasswithmyheadman and Second Toughest and an unexpectedly ace late comeback with Barbara, Barbara. Their peaks are so great, an easy 5.

Tough call on which album and single right now though.

Only heard dub & second toughest but heard those a lot just because of my age, Trainspotting and so on. Think they’re rubbish tbh.

Fuck yes, I bloody love Underworld. Straight 5.

Instant 5. They have everything you want from an artist - good singles, multiple great albums and decent live.

  1. So 5.
I’ll be back with a long, rambling explanation after breakfast, so there’s that too look forward to

2003 - a girl I think I’m in love with calls and says she has tickets to see chemical brothers DJ in Cardiff that night and of course, being a 19 year old with only a week left of his shit bar job I call in sick and get on the train without a second thought. The drugs start taking hold as we’re sat on the grass outside the tent at the start of the Chemical’s set - as we hear the opening notes of Dark & Long (dark train) she takes my hand and we run into the crowd - depersonalise for a couple of seconds and see myself in 3rd person as we run, I peak and snap back to myself as the big chords drop… and I don’t think I sat down once for the next 12 hours.

For various reasons it didn’t work out, although we’re still very good friends almost 20 years later and there are few people alive that I have more time for.

Underworld though - that moment was like kicking open a door in my head. Until then I’d liked my electronica strictly ‘intelligent’ and firmly placed the majority of dance music in the ‘dumb’ pile. It wasn’t entirely my fault, when I was 16-18 the biggest dickheads I knew were all obsessed with godawful trance, which sullied the whole ‘clubbing’ thing for me. Chemicals got a pass because they were almost a rock band really.

Once I’d got my head around it, it opened the door to some of the most life-afirming musical experiences I’d ever had and that moment, Underworld, did it for me.

I haven’t even talked about the albums yet… the best of is a fantastic starting point, and was the next thing I spent money on after that night. Dubnobass or beaucoup fish are probably my favourites, but unfortunately I found them during a lull. Barbara Barbara was a return to form and the Drift series has been wonderful.

Haven’t seen them live yet, somehow circumstances bhave always prevented it. They’re top of the bucket list though.

I will love them forever.

Always got time for them. But not that much time. 4/5

Love them. The albums are obviously great, but for me they will always be at their best live - think I’ve seen them 12 or so times. Highlights:

  • First time catching them at an all nighter at Brixton Academy on the Second Toughest In The Infants tour in '96
  • Headlining the second stage Saturday night of an extremely wet Glastonbury in '98 and lifting everyone’s spirits
  • Rocking up early to see them play Big Day Out in Sydney only to find that Kraftwerk were on before them :open_mouth:
  • Roundhouse on the Barbara Barbara tour - what a comeback album
  • Closing Latitude festival Saturday night last year - lovely to see them on a massive stage again for the first time in ages

Just the 40 years they’ve been going too :+1:

I swear we did these already

What an evening! We had people fly over from Ireland for it and it didn’t disappoint

Friday night or Saturday night?

It was the Friday night. Kept on partying for the weekend and then went to Sri Lanka on the Monday.
Good times. I miss being able to do stuff.

Was that the night that the fire alarm went off?

No, thank god. :open_mouth:
