WHO?

Gone for a 4 which i may bump up to a 5 at some point.

Was obsessed for a few years but then everything after Eskimo Snow was disappointing and I rarely listen to them now.

Went to see them the evening of my first day at SI which is a nice memory and also they introduced me to Young Fathers when they supported at Electric Ballroom.

All about the lyrics really tbf to the lad.

This is the only context I know this band from, no idea how it compares to the original but I like this Boards of Canada remix.

I really like them but marked a 3 because I feel like I should like them more than I actually do. Dunno if that makes sense.

Cracking live band though.

Don’t exist. 0/5.

I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE THE VOICE OF THE STREETS,
BUT MY FATHER WAS A RABBI AND MY MOTHER MADE BEATS,
I MEAN BOOKS,
AND THE KIDS FROM THE STREETS ALWAYS GAVE ME DIRTY LOOKS.

This is another ace BoC remix, from Yoni’s other group:

I think they deserve a 4. First 2 records are genuinely brilliant. Diminishing returns on everything after that but still listen to Alopecia quite a lot and still have a nice time doing so. 4/5.

Think they’d be right up your street actually.

One of the best lyricists, period. Take the first verse of These Few Presidents – most short-story writers would give their embossed fountain pens to be able to provide a sense of place, occasion and mounting dread so seamlessly:

AT YOUR HOUSE,
THE SMELL OF OUR STILL-LIVING HUMAN BODIES
AND OVEN GAS.
YOU PRAY TO NOTHING OUT LOUD,
TWO FIRST NAMES & AN AMPERSAND
EMBROIDED PROUDLY ON A KITCHEN TOWEL.
YOU’RE A BEAUTIFUL AND VIOLENT WORD,
WITH THE SKINNY NECK OF A CHINESE BIRD
IN A FADING ANCIENT PAINTING.
AND IF YOU’RE IN HEAVEN WAITING,
YOU MADE IT THERE FIGHTING
THE TIGHTEST KITE STRING
IN A BAD STORM WITH LIGHTNING.

Even though I haven’t seen you in years
Yours is a funeral I’d fly to from anywhere

is one of my favourite lines in any song I think.

Think I got into them via the old boards. I remember people posting a lot about those first three albums and they’re still great.

“Even though I haven’t seen you in years
Yours is a funeral I’d fly to from anywhere” is a really great lyric.

Genuinely never heard of them/5

Used to be obsessed with them, elephant eyelash particularly. Still love a lot of that Anticon stable. But for me it hasn’t aged particularly well, I find some of it a lot cringier than I used to. I’ll still stick on some of my favourite tracks when I feel like a bit of nostalgia.

The way Alopecia builds up to Simeon’s Dilemma is incredible. It’s a genuinely perfect record to me and I love it dearly. Was really sad to miss those full album shows a few years back.

Probably a 4 because of how much Alopecia towers over the rest of their output for me
