This made me cackle and wish I could go back in time to use it as an insult.

As someone who was becoming aware of indie music at the same time Shiny Happy People was being played to death on the radio, and hated it, this thread has at least made me think I should go and listen to some of the early REM albums.

I’d just start from the very beginning really (Chronic Town). You get the sense of progression and how they got to that later stadium rock point.

I was there for both and R.E.M were good even if Stipe was a bit annoying but that Radiohead set was unbelieveable. It was just a perfect Glastonbury moment.

I’m still cross DiS have ruined Radiohead for me. Have I said that before?

I don’t think anyone is decrying any user’s individually, the key line is always “we’re so boring, we’re so predictable”. People always seem surprised when aggregation comes up with the most predictable answer as if that isn’t inevitable from the outset.

this is the underlying principle of the success of The Beautiful South (and Coldplay)

REM have made some great records, but I do find the college rock run to be more than a little overrated. Maybe it’s just because the influence is so all-pervading but I can’t work out what people find to be so special about it.

Radiohead are my favourite band and have made at least three of my favourite records by anyone. Four if you count the “ignore the tracks they put on the album and out different tracks on it instead” version of KotL. Of the other albums, three are still great, one is very good and the other two are Pablo honey and the Bends.

No John Cena I can’t, my mask is making my glasses fog up…

…but to put it in perspective, I might rank my favourite REM record just above The Bends.

Stone Cold Steve persistent, dry Coughstin.
