Agreed - massively underrated record.

Well New Adventures is the best album and that’s number 10 (I assume you’re not counting Chronic Town EP, which is perfect in every way)

Was going to say more, hard not to fault there were at least 8 LPs in that are great.
Wasn’t counting EP or the ‘bonus stuff’ collections of Dead Letter Office etc

i was going to say ‘first 4 albums and EP’ but it was too clunky

I can feel an REM binge coming on

I can comfortably say I don’t think R.E.M. released anything less than a 7/10 album from Murmur to Up. A very, very sharp dip after, but what a run…

Feel it’s a shame Chronic Town got called an EP not mini-LP and not given proper reissues. Such a great record that has got a bit lost.

I would argue such people are taking what’s ultimately a silly thread too seriously, personally.

I know Up’s not flawless, it’s too long but I’ve got no idea what you’d take off. It’s drowsy, but that also works in it’s favour. The run of Walk Unafraid, Why Not Smile, Daysleeper and Diminished, they are so beautiful. I think they are Stipe’s most compelling lyrics, really interesting and intricate character studies. Then you have this sort of freewheeling open mindedness regarding instrumentation that can give you a strange skittering banger like Hope. I don’t think it’s the kind of album you’d necessarily expect a 16 year old to clutch to their heart but that I did.

I love hearing praise for this sad, odd record.

The Cure’s appeal summed up really well by Patrick Freyne here, great writing

Could do without the opener if anything. It would be a cool b-side but it feels out of place.

Take it to the covids thread

I actually can’t choose between these two, two of my all time faves

Really enjoying this thread btw everyone. Which artists are still involved is absolutely irrelevant, obviously.
