i think people will, if only because the kind of people who were into the YYYs and LCD etc are the people with the right class background to become the kinds of people who write the lists, get to define the canon, etc

not saying that those bands aren’t good, just that’s how that stuff seems to work to me. everyone involved, both writers and musicians, probably been to university and so forth

also pretty easy to mythologise all that stuff in the lower east side and williamsburg and all that

I liked that they did a UK tour and had a thrash band called The Locusts as support. Nick came and stood just in front of us to watch them and appeared to enjoy it.
Each track seemed a minute long and they quite obviously didn’t suit the YYY’s audience. They started getting booed after every track at one point. When they announced their last track there was a massive cheer, so they played squealing feedback at us for a few minutes. Very funny.

Getting irked by all the meh reactions ITT but that’s the beauty of it all innit. Big, huge 5 from me.

Fever To Tell and It’s Blitz are just top tier pop albums, two of my all time favourites.

Show Your Bones was a bit of a misstep but has a couple of fun singles (Cheated Hearts, Phenomena)

Mosquito mostly rubbish but Sacrilege is an amazing opener, and I’ve a soft spot for Despair as a simple torch song.

Zinner’s guitar work on Fever to Tell is exceptional. What a talent

Its a solid 3 from me.
Absolutely terrific band. Karen is obviously a fantastic front person, and Nick as a guitarist is so distinctive by modern standards. Exceptional live.

First three albums are all really hard to pick fault with and all a bit different from each other which is obviously a win in my eyes. Should have been bigger than they are / were when you look at their peers.

BUT…
I don’t know what they added to the conversation. What legacy have they left? Did they change anything?

I suppose my scoring system is:

  1. Objectively awful by any metric
  2. Not highly regarded, but better than they get credit for.
  3. Generally pretty good.
  4. Pretty awesome, left or contributed to some sort of legacy.
  5. Exceptional & important. One of the all time greats, or I’m pretty sure will eventually be one of the all time greats.

i’ve never even read meet me in the bathroom so don’t know anything really

suppose the appeal is that it’s a group of quite different and distinctive sounding (albeit not always that original) guitar bands coming from the same place at the same time, rather than like the formation of a new genre which would be remembered forever

For some reason they toured Fever To Tell again a couple of years ago… as support to Beck. Really should have went to the Dublin show but I couldn’t justify paying 60 quid and leaving before the headliner

I’ve read it. It is basically about the end of an era in New York (Manhattan specifically) and how that can’t really happen now. Which is all true. The last hurrah of the old school NYC rock.

The groups weren’t that distinctive (apart from the early DFA stuff, which is kind of a synthesis of NYC history), but they all had mega personality, which is increasingly rare. I can see why if you were there it was mega exciting.

I did the same with Sonic Youth and Talking Heads, being over critical and gave them 3. Which was as mad as a sack of badgers. Crystal clear 4 as far as the eye can see.

A lot of the songs slap, saw them live once and they fully went HAM. They all look very cool. Don’t really have any one great album tbh, and a lot of other bands do what they to but tbqfh the rest of those bands were shit. I give them a nice round 3

I didn’t vote in Sonic Youth, only know their 00’s stuff like a div. Voted 5 for Talking Heads. My all time favourite band probably. I’d argue they’ve left a huge legacy too.

I would say Dream Wife are terrible (have seen them a bunch of times) so that’s no legacy to leave.

yeah I suppose, feels like to me a lot of it dated extremely quickly, and I can’t imagine most of it being appealing now. admittedly it was only really LCD and the first Liars album that I can recall being into (that’s a good album!) from around the time.

got more fondness for Yeah Yeah Yeahs than most of the others but I dunno

might listen to House of Jealous Lovers by the Rapture

I might be being unnecessarily contrary, but I’d say that there’s a difference between moving music on, and having an influence on like minded bands. Never knowingly heard Cherry Glazzer, but Dream Wife are fine. Good band. But nothing extraordinary. I suppose what I’m saying is take Oasis, they influenced loads of bands. But I can’t think of any that weren’t just an imitation of them with less personality.

I’m not trying to be difficult. Just explaining my reasoning.
