Really fucking very good.

Choosing my favourite YLT album was far too difficult a decision for 7:30am.

One of my most seen live bands. Always incredible.

Great band. Tough call between I Can Hear The Heart and And Then Nothing for best album. Love the low key night vibes of Nothing, but Heart pips it for me. Love that mix of tunefulness and scuzz. Reckon I could listen to stuff like Return to Hot Chicken or Green Arrow on a loop for hours. It’s gotta be a 5, don’t think they’ve put a foot wrong in their back catalogue and they seem like good dudes.

@anon89873996 to thread

If pushed they’re probably my favourite band ever. To be able to cover such a wide variety of styles, sometimes even within the same record, and still be so consistently excellent over such a long career shows how special they are.

I went for electropura as my favourite record, but as mentioned above, it’s such a tough choice! On any day it could be any record from painful through to summer sun. However, I was in the mood for noisy guitar pop today so went with electropura. Also, it has blue line swinger on so need I say more.

Their live shows are great and always throw in some great covers. I love their VU covers particularly as they normally have a good Lou Reed story to go with it.

Anyway, I could go on all day… 5

Have only ever listened to ICHTHBAO, and like similar “classic” indie stuff I was led towards (Grandaddy, Wilco) it didn’t really
do much for me outside of the hits like Sugarcube and Autumn Sweater. Mrs HYG saw them live once and said it was like three hours of aimless guitar noodling, sounds interminable.

Might abstain, might give them a two.

I’ve gone for a 4 but it maybe should be a 5. Their best stuff, their genre skipping, their live shows are all a full 5. But I can’t ignore the 1,057 albums I’m not fussed about.

But yes, a big big 4. Massive 4.

(Looking at the album list there are fewer than I realised, but I do only find myself putting on that insanely good best of)

First got into YLT on the I Am Not Afraid of You tour. They’d always been a big blank spot for me, but some friends were going to see them so I tagged along. I think they must have played for at least 2 hours, and I loved every second of it.

Remember them doing an incredible version of The Story of Yo La Tengo and just being rooted to the spot, mesmerised, beer forgotten and growing warm in my hand.

Their range and depth is extraordinary, and they can make the simplest of emotions feel profound. Plus they seem like such lovely people.

Got to be a 5.

A band that have given me so much joy over the years and I still haven’t listened to everything they’ve done. 5/5

This EP is a personal favourite. Properly love it.

The story of YLT is such an underrated song in their back cat. It can build forever… love it!

I feel seen

Absolutely smashing that 5. Would probably say they are my favourite band if I was pushed to answer that question. Just the best. The balance between sweet songs and 15 min freak outs, always out on a cracking live show. Have a lot of personal stuff tied up with them, including the first dance at our wedding (that we didn’t actually do because we were too busy ceilidh dancing, so had the first dance when we got back to our accomodation).

Awesome. Which song did you go for for your first dance? They inspired my wife’s walk down the aisle song with their cover of I found a reason.

A high 3. Only go back to I Can Feel The Heart Beating As One of the albums I’ve listened to. Good musicians, solid live act. No essential songs.

Was this

But were having such a nice time dancing with our mates that it totally slipped us by (as did the cutting if the cake and some other bits)

giving them a 1 because I don’t like the photo

I’ve gone with a 4. I really like them and that run from I Can Hear… to I’m Not Afraid… is pure magic. But I don’t love them as much as I possibly should. Seen them live a few times at End Of The Road and they’ve definitely veered from “a bit dull” to pure joyfulness.

A really odd band that I go through phases with.

Top 5 songs:

  • Season Of The Shark
  • Cherry Chapstick
  • Black Flowers
  • The Story Of Yo La Tengo
  • You Can Have It All

Kind of got a little sick of Autumn Sweater because it is ALWAYS the YLT song that Spotify plays when it goes into one of its choosing stuff after an album has finished. Wish its algorithm was a little more random.
