As promised, this week is The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs. Yes, there really are 69 songs on this album, it’s not just a clever name. But how good is it really?
Going to do something different for best track as there’s so many of them. Choose your top 3 tracks from each volume then I’ll do a playoff in a couple of days
I like it but I don’t love it. Not something you can listen to in one sitting, so I tend to just go back to a few favourites (mostly on Disc 1 - Absolutely Cuckoo, Chicken With Its Head Cut Off, Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side, I Don’t Want To Get Over You, The One You Really Love), except I’ll nearly always sack it off in favour of listening to The House of Tomorrow for the thousandth time. Or Strange Powers.
The Death of Ferdinand de Saussure was very cathartic to listen to during my degree, Yeah! Oh Yeah! is brilliant. Never got the love for The Book of Love.
Voted 8/10 because its worth that but hoping it ends up 6.9/10.
This album was a bit of a holy grail for me for a while, loved All My Little Words on a free CD with a magazine (Select I think). Took a few years to find the a reasonable price, only ever saw it at £30 until eventually Fopp had it for £5. Glad I got it at such a better price but wonder if I’d love it more if I’d had it the extra few formative years.
I prefer 50 Song Memoir as far as their gimmick albums go but agree this is the right one to poll if only doing one per artist.
Forgot to say, HGIIR will take a break for a couple of weeks after this thread. It will return with one of my all time favourite albums on 15th February. It’s my birthday that week so please indulge me.
