yeah shocking in a different way to Nas. That they (understandably) had such a cold, dead eyed world view at that age is scary.

Listened to ā€˜Illmaticā€™ again today, the only beat Iā€™m not so keen on is ā€˜Representā€™ but I donā€™t think the ā€˜The World Is Yoursā€™ is one of Pete Rocks best beats either, still a really good tune though. Everything else is ace tbf.

Feel like Iā€™m nitpicking cos I do enjoy the album start to finish but for some reason I just donā€™t find it as absorbing as other great hip hop albums from that era.

I think thereā€™s just not that much left new to be said about it. Hence all the ā€œPerfect, 10/10ā€ comments. The debate feels more or less wrapped up on this one, and every one of its 40 minutes have been dissected, but that doesnā€™t detract from the quality of the record.

Reckon the hooks could be a bit more varied tbh. Reckon thatā€™s the recordā€™s biggest flaw. Too many repetitive mantra hooks. Nit-picking though

Turns out this was bullshit as it and Illmatic were both on a 20ish album comp with notes my mate gave me 10-odd years back. I guess I just lost track :roll_eyes:

I still havenā€™t listened to Mobb Deep BUT Prodigyā€™s Return Of The Mac is so good and ā€˜Mac 10 Handleā€™ is one of my favourite rap tracks ever. Theo should give that a try too.

Yeah, love that album. There wasnā€™t a lot of hip hop that I was really loving in 2007, but that albumā€¦ I actually feel it was the precursor to things like Marcberg, which in turn started itā€™s own waveā€¦

Actually an Alchemist produced Nas album is one of the few things that could get me excited for new stuff from him. He has such a knack for producing full lengths and bringing out the best in vets while keeping the beats fresh.

Wouldā€™ve been a much more sensible choice than Hit Boi, but yā€™know, Nasā€¦

i think i reach for it was written more than illmatic nowā€¦

not that i like it better but the songs on it arent quite as locked into my psyche so im still discovering a bit from it. i gave you power through affirmative action is a really great run of tracks. i think currently my fav nas song is take it in blood.

Yeah, thatā€™s a great shout! Him or maybeā€¦ Muggs? I get the impression that heā€™s reluctant to work with who he perceives to be veteran producers, though. Regardless of how fresh they still sound.
