Cheers JohnM, I have added this tag to my watch list

I’m guessing you voted Endtroducing as the next album

Bought tickets to the m b v gigs during a lecture. My mate Chris asked what I was doing so I explained and I said “are you interested?” and he said “yes” so I got him a ticket too. He thought I said “Bullet for my Valentine” though and was disappointed when the tickets turned up in the post. I sold his for him and went my myself and had a really good time.

Loveless is really good. Tend to reach for the collection of EPs they put out in 2012 if I want an MBV fix. Picking a track from that list is a difficult exercise eh.

Briefly went with the Beasties but not sure I can take all the try-hards on here pretending it’s not 10/10.

At least Entroducing… should get less of that I feel.

I had it saved as a spotfiy download but just checked and i can’t listen to it anymore

Yep

Dunno why. NMH’s EP ain’t on anymore either

those bastards

To Here Knows When recklessly loud is my favourite musical experience I think

I’m 100% the right age and target audience for Loveless. Listened to it plenty of times and periodically returned and given it another go. Not only not for me but I actively dislike it.

2 because there are of course many worse albums.

Tried and tried and I just don’t get it. Not for me. 3/10.

Think it’s pretty much flawless. It obviously held this huge reputation and MBV generally held this reputation for the way the sounded, so when I heard it (which would have been in the early 00s) I was expecting something more formless and was surprised at how good the songs are. I’d say that’s why it stands up now, the songwriting is so good on it, beyond the guitar sound, buried vocals, etc.

Completely original piece of work tbh absolute 10. Throughout large chunks of the album you can just close your eyes and the emotional world created by the wall of sound is so rich.

That double CD remaster was a bit shit though eh? What was up with the audio glitch on that?

I can see why it’s not for everyone, the songwriting and melodies take a back seat to the layers of noise, feedback and overall atmosphere. It’s not a one of a kind but more a progression from the j+m chain, pastels, noise pop and psychedelia etc. But for what it does do, with these roaring soundscapes, it does v well.

Not a Wilco guy but his cover of When You Sleep shows how great the songwriting is also. The sonics just add a whole new dimension to it

Oh yeah I’m sure if it clicks with you then it’s a great record. Never really got JAMC either tbh.

It’s a 10.

It was a 10 the first time I heard it (c. 2003-ish)
It was a 10 the last time I heard it (c. 2 months ago)

It was a 10 everytime in between

I always liked this Mark Richardson bit from Pitchfrok’s 90s list:

When it comes to Loveless , we understand each other so well that we nod and grunt like we’re standing in front of Hank Hill’s house. For me, it’s been that way for some time: Seeing the letters “M”, “B” and “V” next to each other in a review of another band’s album is enough to get said record on my “music to check out” list. I suspect I’m not alone.

Now that Kevin Shields is in better health and is slowly returning to the scene, he’s explained that Loveless was something of an albatross for him, that he never could find a proper way to follow it. He should be comforted by the fact that no one else has been able to follow it, either. I’ve long dreamt of an album that was “Like Loveless , but more ,” but I haven’t found it. And so many hundreds of albums have tried. Perhaps this is the sound of a single idea perfected. We should move on and continue to explore the vast spectrum of sound and feeling music provides, but we’ll always return to Loveless for what it alone can deliver. --Mark Richardson

The scores itt are upsetting me.
