Rarely used these days due to the US hegemony or whatever but yeah it’s still a real word that can be used, hence Aerodromes.
Obviously using it is a particular stylistic choice for a US band. I guess file alongside calling your band Pavement not Sidewalk or indeed Tortoise not Turtle?

It always bothered me that British Post rock band Let Airplanes Circle Overhead use the US spelling even though they take their name from the Auden poem “Funeral Blues” which has the UK spelling.
It also bothers me that no one ever listened to Let Airplanes Circle Overhead. They got lost in the glut of post rock bands in the last decade and totally overlooked despite being way better than most.

What’s the Americanism* here? Different words for different animals, surely?
*Often Americanisms are older, and it’s the UK that changed (from reading the Bill Bryson book about US English).
I have read those books. Any use of English in America that is unique or predominant there is an Americanism surely? It doesn’t matter if it was an old term.
Maybe, I’m not sure tbh. To me, when (British) people use it is often with the assumption that the US version is a ‘corruption’, and therefore newer.
