It’s not too late to change the voting system imo

Lunchtime on one of the sunniest/hottest days of the year is probably not the ideal setting for your first ever listen to Spiderland to be honest.

“how could anyone genuinely like Cher???” I cry as I register my 10/10 vote for this thing

(I am listening now. I also do not get it and don’t care to listen to it again to try and get it)

I fucking adore Mogwai and this song but it is wild how they based a whole career re-writing ‘Washer’

Did you finish the whole thing? I genuinely appreciate you trying it on my recommend by the way!

I’m afraid I didn’t. The first two tracks were nails down a chalkboard for me in that way I’ve spoken about many times where the time signatures are off-kilter and the percussion is doing something different to the rest of it. It feels like a borderline OCD response I have to that sort of thing, a physical discomfort and I can’t get past it.

That loud bit in Washer was good but way too brief. Can probably be filed as: “Appreciate what they’ve influenced more than the influencers themselves”

If I can have your attention for just a few more minutes, listen to the top rated on the poll, the final track ‘Good Morning, Captain’ and then you’ve pretty much covered the main points. It’s the iconic song and moment the album builds up to and has a similar loud moment to ‘Washer’. No pressure of course but I think you can pretty much make a complete judgement call on it after hearing that.

I get that there’s some similarity in the chord structure/melody, but it’s not a rip-off really, and also Hunted was written for their 3rd LP, so it’s not like it was their first ever track or something. I dunno, Mogwai are pretty open with their influences but they’re very much their own thing, don’t think it’s fair to say they’ve just based everything off of Slint.

wtf? dunno if you’re doing a bit, but it’s literally a 40 min album that many hold up as an absolute classic. is life really so short? give it a go and you never know, you might be surprised. seems very narrow-minded to just ignore it for whatever reason?

Doing so now. These spoken word vocals make me cringe I’m afraid. Would be much more inclined to give more time if they were an instrumental band.

Yeah, the remaster was a few years ago, 2014 according to the quick Google I just did.

Best of the bunch tbf. It’s like they have a lot of elements that I really like but have assembled them in the wrong order or something though, I think I’ll stick with “probably responsible for stuff I love but I don’t like them themselves” as my takeaway

I am exaggerating of course but I don’t think it’s unfair to say Mogwai’s signature sound is a direct reference to Slint. They moved past it from about Mr. Beast onwards but there’s quite a strong resemblance to a lot of songs from the first few years of their career that are very clearly influenced by Spiderland across their first few years. Braithwaite has admitted as such in the past

also, it’s the 4th LP

Loveless should have been better then shouldn’t it

Totally get why the vocal delivery/lyrics wouldn’t be for everyone, I think that aspect of it is the major “you had to hear this at a certain time in your life to get” but yeah instrumentally they’re pretty timeless. The video of them as kids rehearsing ‘Good Morning, Captain’ in their garage instrumentally is incredible.

again, appreciate you taking the time!

You’re not stuttering, possibly stuck on ‘Repeat’ though
