7/10
Up there with my ATD albums. Can’t add too much to what’s been said already. Picked it up on a geography field trip studying urban geography of town centres (CBDs anybody). Instantly fell in love with it. Yes, the lyrics are toss, but who cares.
I’m chuckling to myself about someone having such high standards that their all time favourite album is only a 7/10
Never got the hype for this band, went for a 6 because it’s above average at best. Obviously some great songs on it but not enough to really make it great.
Might listen in work today, see if it’s any better to my ears.
Interpol categorically sound a lot more like Joy Division than they sound like REM
Listening now and I’ve remembered how much I thought Say Hello To Angels sounded like a Smiths song when I first heard it (with Ian Curtis on vocals of course)
Geoff Rickly of Thursday fame had a great anecdote where he tried to throw chips into the bassists gun holster to annoy him
Always thought this was one of the weaker tracks on the album but seems to be the one they play live the most
10/10, obviously.
MY LOVE’S A LABORATORY I SET ALL MY PETS FREE SO BABY YOU SHOULD SLEEP WITH ME
Fucked it, that one’s not on the album.
I’m a harsh critic.
Yeah Say Hello is the only song not as keen on basically you can very clearly see where it was lifted from, but it was their first single so I can forgive it
Yeah, at this point he still KEEPS HIS URGE IN THE ICEBOX
doomy, gloomy, atmospheric
perfect album for a car journey in the dark during winter
I just really like the way it all slots together rhythmically, the interplay between the instruments is just so good and is what’s missing from their later albums
True classic for me - and as is usually the case with seminal albums I didn’t fully get it at first. I was intrigued by various elements of the band and perhaps liked some songs but it was way too advanced for me at the time. It’s grown and grown over the years and still surprises me when I put it on now. I had tickets for the anniversary show in London but couldn’t make it in the end which is a lasting regret (I later saw them at Primavera and thought they were great - though it was a normal set).
Interesting spread on best track votes. Probably says a lot that I really had to think about it - and on different days could easily pick different tracks.
I guess it’s true that Interpol wouldn’t be compared to Joy Division if their singer didn’t sound like Curtis and they didn’t sound quite like Love Will Tear Us Apart, the only song by Joy Division most people ever heard.
Completely unrelated, if I had a million pounds my life would be very different.
I like the mood of the record in general but find it sags a bit in the middle for my liking: Say Hello, Hands Away, Obstacle 2. First 4 tracks are what will make me come back to it.
Will go a 7
I think that’s a really good line
bit bonkers though
