Frasier never punches down like The Big Bang Theory does (well it does with Daphne’s awful family, but the show was in decline at that point anyway, it certainly never does with Martin).

Those accents must have driven him nuts.

Never seen Cheers, but Frasier is a solid 5.

Genuinely think Fraiser was a smarter, more subtle take on the typical 90s American sitcom than the other usual suspects. And the presence of a straight man in Martin makes it more bearable than Friends – in both, the lead characters are awful, but you’re meant to unquestionably root for the moronic Friends, while Martin constantly points out what obnoxious, pretentious arseholes Frasier and Niles are. The writers are great at farce and there’s a fair few examples of it building up to proper giggle fits. It’s also just a slightly more interesting dynamic than your typical 2.4 children family or sexy young group of friends.

Whenever I’ve caught it on breakfast TV it’s held up very well too. Parts of it do veer into typical 90s sitcoms fluff but it’s still worth a strong 4/5. The best of those sitcoms bar Seinfeld?

Think I was too young for Cheers. Bored the pants off me as a kid and never went back to it. Haven’t heard enough positive things in terms of how it’s held up to give it a watch.

@AQOS, I hope Will and Grace is on the list somewhere. I think that would be a really interesting one to reassess in its LGBT portrayals in a modern light

Probably my ultimate comfort viewing, if I happen upon any episode from any era when channel hopping I will watch it in its entirety. It has peaks and troughs but there are so many stone cold classic episodes (the Groovy Lady episode, the one where Frasier tries to set up the station manager with Daphne, the one where Niles dresses as Jesus, any set at the SeeBees) and wonderful lines (I use “fiery Mexican Clives” much more often than I can really justify) that I can’t give it any less than 5.

Never seen enough of Cheers to judge and if I do see it I’m too distracted by how young Woody Harrelson looks to take it in.

They are both the pinnacle of US ensemble sitcoms. Cheers took a while to get started and Frasier went off the boil towards the end, but at their peak they were both untouchable.

And if they weren’t already good enough, George Wendt (Norm) went on some short lived channel 4 karaoke programme and busted out a House Of Freaks cover.

Of course it’s on YouTube. They really don’t make telly like this anymore

God knows how they talked Spike Milligan into this

very fond memories of them both

I used to love watching Cheers on Ch4 at about 6:30 after school. It was by far the best of all the sitcoms shown in that timeslot back then (Blossom, some thing set in a Diner in Phoenix, Family Ties maybe?). It was all Kirsty Alley/ Woody Harrelson era by then though, I’ve not seen many of the older ones

Frasier always seemed really tightly scripted, the farce type episodes were always great. Got shit after Niles and Daphne got together, hardly a hot take though

4/5 for both of them
