The transphobia and homophobia is definitely a big issue in hindsight but it is strange how little it was noted at the time (makes me wonder what current shows will look similarly dated and problematic in the future), it’s no excuse but I guess pre-internet there was just less education available regarding LGBT rights or platforms to speak out on.

Im guessing it’s because people were probably less exposed to openly LGBQT people and weren’t aware how offensive they found it and people were scared to talk out about it. The internet has helped a lot in this regard

He was shit on Top Gear too.

This thread has been marvellous, it’s like the entire board condensed into one thread.

What, Friends?

A HGWIR: Fresh Prince would be interesting (I use the word ā€˜interesting’ with trepidation) because it’s from exactly the same time but a lot more nuanced and progressive and not often widely credited for it. Tackled a lot of big issues with a surprisingly measured hand. Friends went down like a vanilla milkshake but I can still remember the episodes of FP that had the biggest effect on me (the episode about Will’s absent father, the episode where Carlton gets a gun, the episode where Carlton tries to join a fraternity with Will but doesn’t feel black enough)

It’s also absolutely insane how little diversity there is in both the core and guest casts of Friends given that its meant to be 90s New York

also to follow on the fashion chat I feel like the Friends’ stylists saw how well dressed the FP cast were and thought why bother

Fresh Prince is fantastic. The Gun episode is incredible. Also Carlton does a silly dance (and I love it)

Fresh Prince captures so many different perspectives without openly ridiculeing them, sure there were jokes at their expense but it was balanced.

Drat.

Jesus Christ 1.3k replies, where to begin? Getting hard to be a casual DiSer and pop in for a chat.

Was gonna say it’s still pretty good low-brow time filler (and funny) up til around series 8/9 where EVERYTHING is about Monica and Chandler’s sex life. Still never finished the last season. My missus reckons Courtney Cox must have pissed off the writers cos her lines got so bad.

Best bit?

Mmmmm… noodle soup

Remember when Monica thought Chandler was attracted to sharks but stood by him

Um, what’s up, people? You seem to be talking about friends. There’s so much more to discuss.
